the genres line under the title on the imdb just says 'animation'. I know genres can be restrictive but what is this, comedy, drama, something else?

It's a drama. "Animation" is not a genre btw.

Bitter-sweet, whimsical, nostalgic comedy drama. The kind of film where you both laugh and shed a tear (and I did!).
