What language was Alice speaking?

I know that what dialogue there was wasn't important, but it seemed to me that she wasn't speaking English, and she wasn't speaking French. Was it Russian? It makes me curious what she was doing in that little Scottish village.

reply

I read somewhere that it was Gaelic.

reply

Scots Gaelic.

It's not made entirely clear where Alice lives, but we can presume it's one of the islands off the West coast of Scotland. Although Gaelic is not widely spoken in Scotland as a whole, it's still quite common in the Northwest, and there are a number of places (most notably the Outer Hebrides) where you'll often hear it spoken as the first language, over English.

reply

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. :)

reply

You can bet that if Scotland ever really gains independence they'll be trying to push Scottish Gaelic as an official language.

reply

...isn't that a little irrelevant?

reply

Well, it goes to show that Gaelic is prevalent enough that an average person like Alice might speak it all the time, rather than bothering to get used to straight English (or French for that matter). Relevant enough.
