Anyone else get a total Italian Neorealism vibe from this film? In particular, I thought often of De Sica's _Umberto D._

Not really. At least I wan't thinking about that. However, what I kept thinking was how much this was a knockoff of Chaplin's Limelight.

Neorealism in animation is more evident in a japanese series titled 3000 leagues in search of mother, based on the novel Cuore and directed by isao takahata.

i didn't sense a neorealistic feel for the film, but I did notice the similarities this had with Umberto D
shareI think it's hard to call any cartoon neorealist, strictly speaking, but the parallels between the themes of a lot of neorealist films is obvious (Umberto D, Bicycle Thieves and especially La Strada).
