That's what I always felt about the series, that the show's writers would tend to paint themselves into a corner, in some situations to a point of no return (Dexter married, Rita dead, Brother Sam dead killed early, Debra finding out...). Overall I'm fine with everything but the last minute of the penultimate episode and finale (I'm only a little shaky on Season 6 due to what I consider the vagaries of the villains and what I mentioned about Brother Sam), but certain events changed the trajectory of the show, and some viewers didn't like that (even though I remember many viewers at the time complaining about characters such as Rita, and even the screentime Miguel was getting in Season 3).
