Wrong translation

Watched this movie a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Something different than the usual (romantical) comedy crap. For those people who do not celebrate Xmas as a church holiday it gives that custom of present giving another dimension I would say. And a proof that modern film makers do can make movies with heart and soul when they want.

Still there is a moment I want to clarify. My mother language is Russian so if there is a movie a really like, I watch it in Russian after I have seen the original just to see how it is translated. I noticed that when the father talks to Nicolas at the beginning of the film, Russian and English translations differ at one point. I found Finnish subtitles (the film is Finnish) and saw that the Russian subs were closer home than the English ones. Assuming that not everyone here knows Russian, I give here Finnish phrases and their English equivalents (for so far Google Translate says). So here we go. Father says:

“ Mistä sinä olet saanut päähäsi että jouluna annetaan lahjoja? Vaikka onhan se kaunis ajatus”.
“ Where have you gotten in your head that gifts are being given at Christmas? Although it is a beautiful idea”.

The official English version goes as follows:

“Dont worry, Nikolas, we will not be gone that long. And we will be back soon”.

Yeah, right. Where have you gotten in your head it was ever said?!

I find that translation of finnish original gives you a better understanding of Nikolas's character. The boy has seen his purpose even before the tragedy struck.
