Great Indie Film To See

Zoe R. Cassavetes seems to be another new female writer/director who has the talent and drive to create innovative indie films (very much in the vein of Sophie C. – who unfortunately had a sophomore misfire with Marie A.). What is it about these two daughters of legendary male directors? Why do they seem to have learned the lessons of the business well and are combining those lessons with unique voices and perspectives? I can’t answer the questions but I am glad that each are making great films.

Kudos to Parker Posey as well - she does a great job in this indie gem. It is not a movie for those who like summer flicks, as opposed to indie films.

I'd watch Marie Antoinette all week long. Borken English... Maybe in fragments. Maybe.

I didn't find it boring and I thought the directionless was on par with her character who was "directionless" and looking, which was the point of the whole movie. To me it definitely qualifies as an emotional art movie like the French movie entitled "Gabrielle", which I will admit had stronger acting. This movie was a bit lighter and youthful than "Gabrielle". Plus I do agree that because of the slow nature of this movie it's not going to break any movie attending records. Though all in all I enjoyed it and don't feel it was a waste of time or money on my part!

I loved this movie!! Outstanding performance by Parker Posey. Best film I've seen in a while.

FYI, Sofia Coppola's second film was Lost in Translation. We're on imdb, I'm just saying.

I agree about Broken English (and the root statement about S. Coppola) and kind of have to LOL when people criticize it for being "directionless" I wonder if they've ever seen a John Cassavetes film. Or any indie film for that matter.

I also kinda LOL when people are like, SHOCKED that women want to follow in their father's footsteps. I wonder if anyone criticizes Jason Reitman or... other famous people's sons for wanting to go into the family business.

Actually LIT was her third film (we both need updating) as a director but your point is right on the mark because I had forgotten her prior great film - Virgin Suicides.

Regardless of the number of films that she has made, I hope that she bounces back from her last one because I think that her prior two films were great. Perhaps she is better with smaller more intimate stories than the sprawling big budget extravaganzas.

We live in a very sexist society and Hollywood is even more so. I would love to see a woman win an Oscar for direction because I think that there are women who are among the best directors and the fact that the award has not yet been given to a woman.
