Clark not saving Jonathan is ridiculous.
Clark not saving Jonathan is ridiculous. I don't care if he told him not to, any normal person would do it anyway.

shareIt was the moment, thought Jonathan, where Clark would finally become his own man and make his own decisions. "Ha ha, he will never let me die trying to save a dog in a tornado! That would be ridiculous!" AAAAARRRRGGHHHH!
shareOnce Clark took the mother to the overpass he had time to run over to Jonathan at normal speed, and save him in among all the flying debris and mess of the tornado. I think he could have done it without giving away his superhuman abilities as well. People would have witnessed a miracle for sure but they would be assuming that Clark and his father were incredibly lucky rather than embracing the idea of Clark being a superhero of some sort.
Seemed like Jonathan dying and Clark revealing his identity were both avoidable. But yes I agree that Clark would have tried saving his dad regardless.
Why didn't he just wait until it was all over and everyone had disappeared and then just fly around the Earth really fast to turn back time?
He could have then blown the Tornado out of it's original path and saved Jonathan without anyone knowing he'd done it...
Wrong film. Besides he didn't know he could fly back then.
shareIt was Jonathan's decision. He decided protecting his son was more important than his own life.
sharepathos, man, PATHOS!
We all know Jonathan dies in Superman lore, so why not make it dramatic with him urging his son to use his powers for the greater good, rather than selfishly?
I thought it worked well. And, incidentally, Costner was great in this.
Just one of the many ways this was not a movie about Superman.
shareSo it was about....Batman?
shareIt was about a side of beef wearing a blue suit. It was not Superman.
shareCould have fooled me. I thought the whole baby sent from a dying Krypton to Earth who grows up on a farm and eventually uses his powers to save the human race while falling in love with a reporter called Lois thing was quite similar to the Superman story I grew up with.
You didn't like the execution, I get it, but to say it's not Superman is the online equivalent to crossing your arms and stomping your feet. NO!! That's a BAD SUPERMAN!! I DON'T LIKE IT!!
Did you really want to see a cheesy Reeve-retread? I'm personally glad they took some chances and injected a bit of testosterone into the proceedings.
It was a silly contrived scene. By comparison, the simple scene of Jonathan dying in STM was far more effective.
shareI agree. I'm a huge fan of MOS, but this part didn't add up. STM's scene was so powerful because, as he said, he had all these powers and he couldn't even save him.
I also agree with what was posted above - he could have looked very human and still saved his father. Oh well. It's still my favorite Superman movie by a long way.
Thought the same thing. It's the STM quote 'all these powers and he couldn't even save him' make the whole scene.
Man of Steel easily could have done something similar to this if Clark was too busy to save Johnathan; that same guilt could have still played. Plus we could have gotten a great 'sacrifice' scene from Costner that would inspire Clark .Johnathan's death just didn't work in this movie for me at all.
Agreed! He just stood there and screamed like an idiot. Superpowers or not my father is getting saved even if I died trying. Perfect example of a situation where one needs to act fast, and worry about the consequences later.
