they didnt seem sad at all.

I don't think the daughter's were very attached to their father. Especially seeing as he was always going away.

Children do not handle death the same way adults do. They simply don't have the coping skills or the experience to even grasp their grief. In most cases they may not even understand what death or dying really means. They usually have what is called delayed grief, which is when they dont have an immediate reaction but they will most likely grieve up to months or years later by acting out or just being sad and upset.

reply

Yeah, children grieve differently. They don't understand death like adults too. Remember when the one daughter asked her mom "is daddy really dead like your mom and dad"?

If Tobey Maguire was relative often away, it might be also that they not fully realized that their dad is gone for good. For them it was relatively normal that their dad is gone for months, so it felt just like always. They would realize much later, when they would interact more with school friends and see them with their dad. Then the realization would kick in for them, but this is more when they get young teenager.

I know. The kids were brats. All they cared about was having fun with Uncle Tommy. I think the script was unrealistic in this sense. It's true that kids don't always realize the gravity of situations (even death), but having the kids show almost no remorse or sadness of their own father was...off.

Agreed, the older daughter even yelled at her dad: "Couldn't you have just stayed dead?" I couldn't believe she actually said that to him.

They were probably some of the most annoying kid characters I have seen in a while. They talked back to their mom, dad, uncle, basically every adult in the movie. They had NO respect, didn't listen, and basically disrespected anybody they felt like. And apparently mom never talked to them about why their dad leaves and how much he cares about them, because they treated him like *beep*

I agree with the OP, this was one of the "off" things about the movie, of which there were quite a few. Then they bond like crazy with their jailbird uncle and they didn't even know who he was when he first rang their doorbell.

reply

kids bond with people quickly, just look at how quickly they make friends. i remember starting a new school when i was a kid, by the end of the day i had about 5 new friends that i hung out with for the rest of the year, i moved to a new city last year and it took me months to make friends. also i reme, ber when my uncle and aunt died, their young kids didn't understand at all, i mean they new their parent had died but they didn't act "sad" in the way you would expect an adult to.

When they were going to the funeral, they were complaining about the dresses. It wasn't about the dresses, it was just hard for them to go.

reply

yeah the kids did not do justice at all. It really got to me, i expect Leon level performances from children in movies... they were poor.
