Trees Don't Die Losing Leaves

I don't know, but that's all I could say when I saw the trailer. I'm pretty sure a character outright says "What happens when a tree loses all of its leaves" and Murphy replies "I'M GONNA DIE?!"

I don't know that seems like a huge jump in reasoning. In this situation, my first assumption would be that when there are no more leaves, I wouldn't be able to talk until they regrow. If I'm connected to a tree in this fictional universe, it losing its leaves wouldn't make me think I would die. Now if the tree rotted, yeah I'd be concerned.

Funny, then why is it ranked 6th in the boxoffice?

Or doesnt that count unless its 1 or 2?

You lost me. You realize the film budget is $75million+. A film needs to at least make 2.5 times the budget in order to breakeven. This movie made less than $7m. Each weak it will lose 60% or more in box office gross. And of that box office amount 1/2 of that money goes to the theater owners.

A quick google will show you article after article of how this film bombed. Not only that but it has a zero percentage from critics on RT. So there is no word a mouth.

Are you serious? A Thousand words have been in the Theatre a week, and so far it has made 7m in, if every week is like that and we count on it being there for least 10weeks, the movies budget is almost earned back, and thats without counting the world box office figures and dvd´s/Blu-rays.

And who honestly cares what critics says? people will watch it and enjoy a fun movie, and then the critics can go watch The Artist or some French movie about paint drying in a hallway.

So wait: you think it will earn the same amount of money at the box office every week for 10 weeks?

reply

It won't make $7mil each week. This past weekend it made 3.6mil. It will be out of theaters in less than a month. Theater owners won't keep this film in theaters because there is no word of mouth, its not a arthouse film and it has no support of the studio. The film was DOA which is why it was completed in 2008 and is just now being released.

It isn't that far of a stretch.

"Till the last petal/leaf/etc falls" has been a plot device used for many a tale.

Well, that's just what the characters assumed.

Remember that the guru said that there were stories of this happening to a man long ago. Murphy asked what happened to the man and the guru said, "He died."

So, Murphy assumed that the guru meant that the man died when the leaves were gone. But the man probably died of old age. But then, it was just a legend anyway.

How can you be sure? This is a magic tree. What you know about muggle horticulture probably doesn't apply to magic trees.

I would be concerned enough that I really wouldn't want to find out if death results from losing all the leaves.

This is not a normal tree. If folks watching the film can't pick up on that, they need to repeat kindergarten.

Or, maybe just complete kindergarten.

I don't think the argument is whether or not it is a normal tree. The argument is that, when asked what happens when a tree loses all its leaves, the first assumption made by Eddie Murphy is that he will die. A tree doesn't die because it loses its leaves. If a tree is dying, sure, the leaves will fall off, but it won't die as a result of losing its leaves. The OP is saying that if someone asked him or her what happens when a tree loses all its leaves, the assumption wouldn't automatically be that the tree is dying, so the leaves are falling off, it'd probably be that it is now autumn. I didn't think the argument being made here was that complicated to follow, I guess some people just need to repeat kindergarten....or maybe just complete it.

If a tree loses its' leaves in fall, it's ok. If it's summer, the tree dies.

What we have here is failure to communicate!
