Why was the film delayed?
Even though the film was released in 2008, which would make sense considering how the Lil Wayne song Lollipop was rather popular at that time. However I wonder why did it take 4 years to get released.

shareMost likely no Studios picked it up to distribute it.
shareRocker you are wrong. If a studio did not pick it up, then they wouldn't even have filmed it on the first place. Nobody films a movie without being sure it's going to be picked up and distributed. That's just a waste of money. The reasons may differ.
shareI think they figured it was rubbish and delayed releasing it.
Its that man again!!
Lots of movies are filmed and held or never released. A studio won't release it if they think it'll bomb. It's better to cut the losses early than to spend big money on advertising, printing the actual films, and all other associated costs.
The studio already had paid to have it filmed, but it obviously took 4 years for them to find a distributor willing to pay for its release.
Probaly as Murphy had another interesting but sad flop Dave, form Fox, depending on when it was finsiehd and released. Thanks for mentioning who did Lollipop as now I remember, (originally populirzed in 1958 by The CHordettes), which is in the following year's "Whip It".Love that song regardless of who records it!
UPDATE:[including edit above correcting the status of the old song ":Lollipop"] In self-correciton, the original song Lollipop, by ANY artist, is not the Lil Wayne song, going through Wikipedia, that song was written by Lil Wayne himself. My Bad.
Cause A Studio Exec saw it.
