Yes, but people like to talk. Eddie Murphy is very loquacious and assertive himself. You can't be assertive or very expressive if you need to not only write everything down, spelled at least understandably; then you must get other people, one-by-one, to read it.
Just the sort of fate that would drive some people crazy with frustration.

^^This.

I assume (hope) this will be addressed in the movie.

He wrote words on a paper, and the leaves still dropped. He looked shocked, and wrote "Die tree!" causing 2 more leaves to fall. He stuck up his middle finger to the tree, and a leaf fell. He then ran to his house in complete fear now.

He should write "I can't talk" (+ that tree related stuff, "...or I will die") on a pad and then show it to everybody.

You missed a key scene. Whenever he writes words or uses sign language, leaves drop. I assume that typing words would make leaves fall too.

He seems to be allowed to draw pictures and play charades.

Watch the movie again to find your answer.

No thanks. It's got Adam Sandler in it. I watch his movies once just to see if he's improved yet as an actor, but it never happens.

Now, I have to say that a movie where he never talks is quite refreshing.

Even if he writes on the paper, it courts.
