So he couldn't write?

So did they establish a rule that made it so he couldn't write words? I mean he got away with drawing at one point, which he should have done a whole lot more if that was the case.

reply

Writing words caused leaves to fall.

Still, I figure there were a ton of alternative solutions. Instead of pissing himself and a ton of other people off he could have made an effort to learn sign language and get an interpreter for it, or maybe edit some video clips together, or IDK, get some sort of a text to speech program. The no speaking / no writing problem didn't seem THAT big of an issue.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.

I am rather surprised that Jack didn't consider learning sign language as a way to communicate.

reply

well the movie takes places over the course of a day or two, sign language isn't that easy.

he could have used up 4 leaves by writing "i lost my voice" on a board and carrying it with him, holding it up whenever people act confused. would have saved a whole lot of trouble. but hey then we wouldn't have a movie

reply

He shot the tree a bird and two leaves fell. I think sign language was out of the question as well.

reply

Maybe he could have used the touchpads that disabled people tend to use? Course he would have needed to spend money on that and if the leaves fall even after that then its all for nothing.

reply

And now, Eddie Murphy starring as ... Stephen Hawking!

reply

As was said, sign language (or at least the act of flipping off the tree) caused leaves to fall. So did writing the words down.

Honestly, one could argue that a lot of the gesturing and the like that he did probably should have counted as words too based on that, but that would have just made for an incredibly lofty task for the duration of the film.

I probably would have just written a short note explaining the tree and then showed it to the few people I could trust. There's really no reason that he couldn't have done that for his wife (aside from them just writing his wife to be horribly short-sighted and self-interested at points).

reply

I missed first half so when I saw the scene at Hotel where he finally explains to his wife about tree, she doesn't believe him. Wondering if he would have done so sooner if she still would gave same reaction?

Poop in his hand ... Poop in his hand

reply

I'm sure if writing words count against him, signing words would count against him too.

How was Jack able to get The Beatles album for the Starbucks employee? If talking, writing and drawing was forbidden, surely typing would also be disallowed assuming he purchased the album from the internet. It was never mentioned in the movie that Jack knew sign language which is the only other possibility.
