The thing is, he has had a string of hit movies (plus a few bombs). He's been in a lot of high-grossing films over the past 15 years, they are just easy, unchallenging fluff.
He really doesn't care about public perception or critics or anything like that. He's content to coast and make lots of money. If he NEEDS a hit movie, well he's got that. What he "needs" to regain respect is a string of good roles in good movies, like Dreamgirls.
On wikipedia's list of biggest box office bombs it said 340 million were lost for Eddie Murphy's movies. But yeah, he has been in movies that made more than the losses, but still.
