Just started watching season 1 and I'm only on episode 3 and I can see why everyone loves it. I currently watch Reign and watched the White Queen and find it funny that Warwick from the White Queen is on the show. I have never been one to follow history but now I'm thinking I should.
The show is not historically correct (nor are the costumes and jewelry), but it is one of the best shows that was ever made. So if you really get into it, don't take it for face value...there are wonderful books and even websites that will give you the real story of Henry and his wives, his children, and his family history.
I was here when it was running originally and it was one of the best boards ever. I have the DVD of The White Queen and have never watched it yet and I don't watch Reign. The Tudors is fantastic--enjoy!

There was a lot more historicity to The Tudors than I actually expected. I could see bits of Warnicke, bits of Fraser, bits of Ives in the plots and characterizations.

It really was, wasn't it? I miss Little Miss Sunnydale the most. The board during the finale was awesome.

Little Miss Sunnydale was a treasure. Brilliant, articulate and so patient with all of our questions about history. I remember that ironically she didn't watch the show, but she would come to the board so we could discuss the "real story". I believe she was writing her thesis on Tudor history, plus she was really lovely, as were most people on this board.

You really should start following history! It's fascinating! We think people are crazy these days with all the stuff on reality tv but the drama of court life is just insane! Start watching documentaries or study some kings/queens/dukes whatever and yowza! They have TONS of material to make great shows off these people!
"Reign" is bloody awful! The way they ridicule history, especially of the tragic Queen Mary of Scots. If a show isn't turning something into bubble gum pop crap then it won't have a place on the CW network. Doesn't Reign make your head explode with how inaccurate and vacuous it is?
I'm not familiar with the history so I don't know what is true and what isn't and I haven't followed all seasons of Reign but I like the fact that all the shows connect to each other. (i.e. The White Queen, Reign, & The Tudors) so far The White Queen has been my favorite.
I purchased Episode 1 about 6 months ago, turned it off after 15 minutes, and have never been back.
I became a bit of an anglophile way back in the mid 1970s with Upstairs, Downstairs, and all the great productions back then like Elizabeth R, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, and non-English history but English actor series like I, Claudius.
So I have a question for everyone, what's the order of history as far as the three shows go? i.e. White Queen, Tudors, & Reign. How does the succession line go? Or if anyone just knows a good site with the info that would be awesome!
White Queen - covers Henry VII's mother's parents life [missing miniseries, covering Henry VII) The Tudors - covers Henry VIII's reign [missing series covering Mary Tudor's reign] Reign - Mary Queen of Scots
Line of succession:
Edward + Elizabeth Woodville = Elizabeth of York (daughter) Margaret Beufort + Edmund Tudor = Henry Tudor
Elizabeth of York + Henry Tudor = Arthur, Margaret*, Mary, Henry VIII
Henry VIII + Katharine of Aragon = Mary I Henry VIII + Anne Boleyn = Elizabeth I Henry VIII + Jane Seymour = Edward
* Margaret Tudor + James of Scotland = James James + Mary of Guise = Mary Queen of Scots Mary QoS + Henry Stuart = James VI
English Reigns - Edward then Richard Henry VII Henry VIII Edward Mary I Elizabeth James VI
First of all Katharine, thank you so much for this breakdown of the shows and the line of succession.
There is a miniseries on Henry VII & his wife Elizabeth of York (parents of Henry VIII) and it is called "Shadow of the Tower" and was made in 1972 as a 'prequel" to the other BBC productions of "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" and "Elizabeth R". (Those two are probably my favorite BBC productions. Both are brilliant but remember, nothing like the sexed up stunning gorgeous 'The Tudors')
I have owned it for a few years but have not watched it yet. Actually, I started and it didn't grab me. It's very "stagey". I hope I can get back to it some day because it's the story as you know of Henry VII and the beginning of The Tudor dynasty.
I just checked Amazon and there is literally 1 set of it left. Region 1 for the US and Amazon has just nicely reminded me I bought mine in 2012. That's how long it's sitting here.
OH WOW. EVEN BETTER. For those who have never seen any of these 3 BBC productions I have mentioned there is a boxed called "The Tudor Collection" that has: Shadow of the Tower The Six Wives of Henry VIII Elizabeth R
It's about $65.00 for Region 1. That's an excellent price considering Shadow of the Tower alone is $35.00.
Just like Maria Doyle Kennedy is the Katharine of Aragon that I weigh all other performances against (she is my favorite KOA), Glenda Jackson IS Elizabeth R...there is no greater. As much as I love Cate Blanchette, she can't hold a candle to Glenda Jackson's incredible performance as Elizabeth.

I saw "Shadow of the Tower" on YouTube a couple of months back; really peaked my interest in Henry VII. My only complaint is that it rushed through so quickly that I never really got to know Elizabeth. But yes, it is worth a watch, particularly for events surrounding the various Pretenders.
