This series has one of the best, and perhaps the very best, finale of any series I've ever seen. It was so well done! But I have a question... He's going to hell, right?
That's what the dream was? A foreshadowing of what will happen to his soul? That awesome scene of him as a young man again where the turbulent sky turns to swirling stars and death gallops towards him?
I only watched the first two seasons and this weekend, I started watching season 1 again. The plan is to finally watch season 3 and 4.
I've seen the finale dream sequence on Youtube. What struck me was that it was so similar to the finale of Ashes to Ashes. SPOILER for AtA--In the finale, we learn the Ashes to Ashes world (and the Life on Mars one too) is sort of a purgatory for dead coppers. The coppers move on from purgatory by entering a pub. As they come to realize that their world isn't "real" and that they are dead, their surroundings break down and they see a dark swirling sky with stars. In the Tudors, as Henry is dying, he walks through the woods with the same dark swirling sky studded with stars.
I thought hmmmmm...did one show copy the other? But I checked and both shows ran their last season in the spring of 2010--both shows would have been shot and completed months before the finale. So it's not like one show would have seen the other's finale episode and copied or be inspired by it. In any case, just an eerie coincidence, I suppose.
The sun was setting, metaphorically, on Henry's reign and his life. As the stars rise, the grim reaper comes for him. It reminds me of that old slogan "The sun never sets on the British Empire".
I thought that dream sequence was beautifully filmed with the lighting and background composition. And it was nice to see Henry looking young, beautiful, and fit again.
