Watching this after completing the Rome TV series makes Tudors rather..

dull..

Of course the Tudors has all the themes that Rome has; the politics, treachery, sex, violence, and so on but all seem rather dull.. Granted, its more polished and civilized (those Romans where wild loll) but its just boring..

Maybe I feel this way because I immediately jumped into the Tudors after completing Rome..

I love Rome. Other than The Tudors and Deadwood, it's the only tv series I own on dvd. Too bad season 2 was rushed after cancelation had been announced. Another season would have been great, but it was too costly and the BBC wouldn't extend it's contract to continue the collaboration with HBO.

The Tudors was only originally slated for 2 seasons, but did so well Michael Hirst was given another 2.

I'd personally give the edge to The Tudors over Rome due to it's fantastic music.

Have you watched all episodes of The Tudors?

reply

No I haven't watched all of them yet. I will continue as per your recommendation and see how it goes.

What I was actually referring to are the timelines that both shows take you vicariously into. For me, watching the Tudors after Rome makes me feel like if I lived in the Rome timeline, it would have been a lot more lively than if I was in the Tudor timeline. The latter just seems a lot more conservative.

Thanks for your recommendation though.

Good choice!

Much of Rome was spent outside, as opposed to The Tudors where most scenes are interior. That may make The Tudors seem smaller in scope. But, of course, the scope of the sets in Rome were epic. So well done.

I hope you enjoy The Tudors as much as I do.

I admittedly prefer the Tudors to Rome (not by much) but I do know what you mean by that.

A big part of it is probably also just the sheer scale of Rome. It was one of the most expensive television series of all time and it really did feel like being taken back in time.

Hopefully as you get more into watching the Tudors it will pull you in more. The actors do a great job bringing the characters to life and making them into people instead of just a vague historical figure. With a lot of characters, when they died, it actually does feel like a loss.

There is always a reason to live.

I was the opposite haha. I watched the tudors first and it took me many episodes to get into Rome to think it was interesting.
