JUST WATCHED IT......

**Spoilers**

Just watched Part 1. It was 14 minutes into the drama and I turned to my brother and said 'this is the best docu-drama I have ever seen'.

And it was. Firstly, the direction. Absolutely incredible. The way they handled the filming of the tsunami itself, in the reflection of the doors and then cutting between real footage was ingenious. It would have been insulting to use CGI etc and it would have perhaps taken away from the impact of the aftermath.

The acting was also fantastic. Tim Roth is, obviosuly, great as the wayward photo-journalist, and I am so glad this drama hasn't whitewashed the detatched attitudes and corruption of the disaster. Toni Collette is also on top form, and Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sophie Okonedo are immensely moving as the couple who start out as such a close and adoring family and are physically and emotionally ripped apart by the disappearence of their daughter.

I still can't believe the BBC put this on BBC 2 and not BBC 1, as I feel so many will have missed out on it. I'll be staying in especially for the concluding part, and I highly recommend this to everyone. I am a huge filma nd TV fan and I thought this was an absolutely outstanding piece of work, visually and as a story.

I actually thought Sophie Okonedo was very poor. Compared to her performance in Hotel Rwanda she was not very good at all.

**SPOILERS**
Roisin, I totally agree with your post. I was rather apprehensive when I sat down to watch Part 1 last night because I thought it may be insensitive, overly sentimental or too upsetting.

What I did see was a very gripping start which filled me with horror as Susie resurfaced from diving in the sea to be met with a confusing and disturbing sight. Witnessing the aftermath of the tsunami must have been horrifying but to return to the beach with no knowledge of the wave is just unimaginable but it did leave me puzzling as to why those on the boat out at sea had no knowledge of it.
I suppose the main reason I did want to watch it was down to the casting because I didn't think such great actors would get involved with a poor production. I was very impressed with Chiwetel's performance, in fact he just seems to be brilliant in everything I've seen him in apart from Love Actually because he was merely Keira's arm candy and didn't get nearly enough screen time.

As far as putting it on BBC2 is concerned I just reckon that they were playing safe. A prime time BBC1 spot may have been considered insensitive because many people will believe it's too soon or unnecessarily portraying human misery, but these aren't my views, although I do think a respectable amount of time should lapse before dramatic re-enactments are shown on telly I think that it's important that these terrible events are shown on our screens so we can reflect on them and not forget.

First of all can anyone tell me what happened at the end of Part One as my bl00dy Sky Plus cut the end of the programme off (the person who invents the software programme for Sky Plus to stop this happening should be knighted!). I saw up to the part where the British Consul was giving a sort of "press conference" and Chiwetel had just given an emotional speech about finding his daughter. Also, when is Part Two being shown please? I put it on "series link" on the (yes) Sky Plus Box but it hasn't listed when the second part will be. If I've missed it due to my Sky Box screwing up again, I'll personally hunt down Mr Murdoch and separate him from his betty swallocks by means of a VERY blunt pair of scissors. Cheers.

That basically was the end - Gina McKee said that she was trying to get her son home and then Sophie O came in with the little girld from the hospital and sat down witrh her on her lap while Chiwetel looked upset and worried for them.

Part 2 on BBC2 Tuesday night...

Apologies for dubbing this a docu-drama. My movie lingo obviously isn't up to scratch. Hopefully I'll recover and blah blah blah. Whatever, its a good show.

Again just to urge everyone to watch it tonight at 9pm on BBC2. I'll be on here afterwards to make a concluding post!

Enjoy!

If they had put it on BBC-1 they would have had to have the news half way through.

Agree, & I thought Hugh Bonneville's acting was dire.

Other than that tho ... a very worthy & well-made production.

I don't understand that. I thought both Hugh Bonneville and Sophie Okonedo were fantastic. Thety absolutely served the story, and truthfully rendered the characters they were playing. I was particularly impressed at how the former managed to avoid cliche in his performance, in a manner that a lesser actor may not have done.

Can anyone tell me what happened. My sky box did the clash thing. I got to the bit where the boy had his leg amputated.
