I wasn't convinced by 'Manchester'

An out of town area of Manchester, full of American cars, a red phone labelled unlike any phone box I have ever seen and American fire escapes on the back of small terrace buildings.

Not like Scott or his art department are unfamiliar with how the UK really looks, is it? This totally dragged me out of the movie.

I wonder if Manchester doubling as New York in the Alfie remake is more convincing than this?

Yeah, not surprised they tried to show as little as they possibly could

Also they should not have concrete steps leading to the doors, looked more like Baltimore in The Wire.

And steel trash cans WTF? Even before wheelie bins, cans were made from plastic.

Couldn't their budget afford a trip to Manchester or any Northern city?

For the length of the scene and the fact there were no major characters in the scene, surely it could not have been that difficult to actually film it in Manchester. Considering there are 2 tv/film studios in the City anyway its not exactly the back of beyond.....

Almost as bad as the Manchester scenes they featured in 'Lost'

And this was noticeable to about .01% of the viewing public. It's just like when a couple hundred tech geeks notice inconsistencies and come to the forums wreaking havoc. It's a movie, let it go.

I hate it when people say 'It's a movie' and believe that that's a legitimate defence of poor workmanship. I would've expected more from Scott, his films are very hit and miss but he's usually always very consistent when he's creating worlds

As Ridley is a British director, I expected the exterior Manchester scenes to be shot in the UK. Then again the Amsterdam scenes were not much to write home about.

Its that man again!!

Since the day they tried to sell me Schloss Sanssouci (near Berlin) for an Italian villa** in an American film, nothing makes me wonder anymore.
(** pity I had been there only the week before...)

Maybe I wasn't watching this movie that closely at first but I'm English and it didn't leap out at me that this wasn't really an English city. What I missed was how the fanatics knew there was a raid. I didn't see the mistake the special forces/police made.

I'm not sure they'd risk a raid like that, btw, knowing there was a high risk of a bomb. There's got to be some other way...

it looked like a dump, which is the general impression of manchester ;)
