Power bar cliff bars, freeze dried foods meat, almonds beans, thermal clothing, hand held GPS that shows you were fish water, and nearby location are locks your locations and can guide you back to were you started, perfected fishing tools, Spot GPS, signal flares, 21st century medicines, snake bite proof clothing, shotgun for bears, 100 percent detail maps of your location, survival guides books, written by people who were their years even decades before you.
Our government should start fining people, for going camping without a Hand held GPS, two way radio ham radio and signal/mirror/smoke/flares for helicopters, getting lost because of their own stupidity.
If you let people know were your going, you should always, have enough food and supplies, just in case you don't make it back, to your original location, then your love one or friends will notice the deadline and call for help and rescue should come looking for you, hell you can even email your love ones your exact location with your hand held GPS, the world has been 99.999 percent mapped out, don't matter were your going, there are always dozens of people in the area that knows how to survive in the wilderness, and have written books about it, there is no reason why anyone should die or even get lost, in the wilderness, in the 21st century, but it happens every day, and the number one reason is that they got lost from their original location, never my GPS stop working, I always face palm when its on the news.

Chris was never lost. The bus is parked right next to a fairly well used hunting trail. Some parts are overgrown, but theres no mistaking that its a trail. In that part of Alaska cell phone coverage is just about nonexistant, and even satellite phone coverage is spotty. Also there are no snakes in Alaska.
Carrying all of those "modern" supplies kind of defeats the purpose of living off the land. He had a ton of guts but was in way over his head. There is plenty of food in that area. I've fished the Teklanika and Toklat rivers, and they are full of fish. It doesn't appear that Chris even attempted to catch fish a single time!!! And yes, he would have been much better off with a shotgun, supplied with bird shot (theres a ton of birds up there) and slugs or buck for bigger game. He got very lucky killing that moose with a .22. Theres a reason it's not legal to hunt large game with small caliber firearms. Too much chance of only wounding the animal, making it much more dangerous to animals and humans alike.
But I agree that when some idiot gets themselves in this kind of situation, they should be responsible financially for the cost of their rescue.
