Exactly how serious of a crime is the chop shop?

I've heard some people say police often don't really pursue cases like this. We all know a lot of things fall through the administrative cracks.

Tim gets two years, 10 months on good behavior. In the grand scheme, 10 months isn't toooooo long for a prison sentence but obviously, it brands you as an ex-con for life.

I just wonder if they had stuck out the case, how likely would they have been to get off, under what circumstances would they possibly be able to get off on and if not...in the present FNL universe, how Tim will be viewed by the community in the future? What kind of jobs could he get? Where would it be a problem and where wouldn't it?

I don't know anything about this beyond what I watched so please educate me.

Well stealing a car is grand theft. Grand theft is the theft of something of higher value. Millions of dollars of cars are stolen yearly, it's a huge criminal enterprise. So yes chop shops will get you a good amount of time in jail. You would not be branded a fellon for life since it's not a violent crime, it will be expunged in time and through a good lawyer.
