Question about Light and Shiori spoilers

Question... Light didn't necessarily have to kill Shiori did he? He wrote in Naomi's description that she "stops the hostage from running away". That doesn't imply that Shiori was to die from the shot, but he goes ahead and writes in Shiori's death too.

Was it just to get that extra sympathy factor from the investigating team? Seems kind of extreme to me, because if she didn't die it would still draw sympathy from them anyway (girlfriend gets seriously wounded...).

If it matters, I have not seen the anime/manga at all. I did read up a little though and realize Shiori was made just for the movie, but was also wondering if Light's character is supposed to be so negative (for lack of a better word). Perhaps I'm a little one dimensional when it comes to movies and such but usually there's a main character that you can connect with... in Death Note though, I couldn't really find that especially with this whole incident. Light was already stepping the line for me when he killed Ray, but again, this whole Shiori thing put him over. I still gave the movie an 8/10 because it is very good regardless.

Yes, Light kills Shiori to gain sympathy and get on the team so he could get closer to L and kill him; he admits as much near the end.

As for Light's portrayal, the film's focus is the way the power of the Death Note gradually transforms Light from an idealist to a ruthless murderer. You're supposed to initially empathise with him, but later come to view him negatively as his methods grow increasingly extreme and unethical. Raye and Shiori's deaths are key points in this arc.

I concur. I think that, when Light kills the FBI team, there is little question that he's crossed the line -- but even there, it's somewhat defensible, albeit barely.

When he kills his GF, though, it is undeniable that he's crossed the line into evil. She was utterly innocent, loved him dearly, and proferred no threat to him at all. Her death demonstrated that she had become nothing but a tool for him to use to get closer to his nemesis L. That's pretty blatantly evil. The point is that the power of the DN has corrupted him totally, and that there is no boundary he won't cross to strike at those who get in his way.

That's why I like the movie better than the manga. In the manga, he's a psycopath with a God-complex from the very beginning.

I think she had to be killed or seriously wounded because if you remember, Naomi panicked and killed herself with suicide. What would she panic over if she didn't shoot somebody? If you get what i mean :s

Naomi's name was in the Death Note, so she would have killed herself regardless, although if Shiori wasn't at least seriously injured, it would have raised suspicions.

I think that the main idea behind it is that, yes, Light wanted to join the investigation team in order to get to L, but that there had to be an elaborate plan to eliminate Shiori. He couldnt just write her name because then she would die of a heart attack which would not eliminate him and he couldnt write that whats-her-name kills her because he cant make her do it under the rules of the Death Note. By writing that she has a gun he knows that if he writes that she is fatally hit by a warning shot it would have to be her gun that did it as people dont carry guns in Japan

Just as we began watching the first part cheering him to kill the bad guys, so we shall watch the 2nd part rooting for him to get pulped!

He had no reason to kill the FBI, they had stopped suspecting him.

That was the thing that really made me dislike the movie in comparison to the anime series. I found Light/Kira sympathetic in the anime series; he had a cause he believed in and he didn't target the innocent unless he really had to for some reason. Killing the police and FBI agents who are trying to catch him is one thing; he really has little choice in that, as it's him or them. They get into it knowing the risks, like soldiers in war knowing that when they sign up and put on a uniform they become a legitimate target for the enemy. And the FBI is a nasty organization which has done a lot of ugly things anyway. So Kira killing them is one thing. But live-action film Kira murders his own girlfriend just to get sympathy from the police so they'll let him into the investigation? That is a MAJOR deviation from what Kira was supposed to be.

The film makers wanted to show that the Death Note was corrupting Light, and Shiori's character exists for that reason.

You can argue Light is corrupted in the manga too, but the process is slower. By the end I think you can argue that Light's corrupted anyway.
