1. ALIEN - An absolute masterpiece, classic sci-fi horror. Ridley Scott set the tone for the other movies, with Giger's ultimate alien design and the realistic sets.
2. ALIEN 3 (Assembly Cut) - Beautifully shot, great atmosphere, and such a tragic ending to Ripley's story. It added a new dimension to the alien universe. It's very bleak, but that's a big part of the appeal for me. Oh, and possibly the best soundtrack of them all.
3. PROMETHEUS - Further exploration of the Alien universe, taking the story in a new direction. The idea of the engineers as creators of humanity and all life on earth ties the whole alien story together with our own fate in such an interesting way. This was just what the franchise needed.
4. ALIENS - Amazing action, great design and still a lot of suspense. This one used to be my number 1 when I first saw the Alien movies, but I guess my taste in films has shifted a bit since then. Some 80s cheese starts to creep in now and then, but never too distracting. Still an absolute classic.
5.PREDATOR - Balls to the wall action, suspense and pure 80s action gold. I'm more a fan of serious sci-fi, which is why I rank the Predator films quite a bit below the alien films, but in its genre it's a classic.
6. PREDATOR 2 - It's stupid, but so much fun. Danny Glover, Bill Paxton, Gary Busey, how can you go wrong?
7. ALIEN RESURRECTION - It has its moments and it works as dumb fun, but the comedic tone does not work within the alien franchise. The plot falls apart quickly too.
8. PREDATORS - It's an okay sequel, but stays a little too close to the original. I don't really like the 'super predators'. Don't introduce what you call the stronger and better predator species and then have them be far inferior to the original.
9. ALIEN VS PREDATOR - Similar to A:R, it is just a lot of dumb action that is enjoyable to watch now and again. The pyramid idea was interesting. If only they had set the movie in the Alien timeline on a different planet. Aliens should not be on present-day earth. I don't mind the PG-13 rating so much, as the gore was never the focus of these movies anyway.
10. ALIENS VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM - Barely a movie. As with the previous entry, aliens should not be on earth, and most certainly not in some small town. Bad acting, uninteresting characters, bad special effects (the aliens looked far too clunky in this. Either Tom Woodruff gained some weight or the directors didn't know how to shoot practical effects...) and a ridiculous plot. The gore was way over the top, and not really the reason why these movies are better with an R rating. Luckily it was all too dark to see anyway.
Thanks God I'm not alone with Alien 3. I love it as much as Alien/Aliens. I do love the Predator series but The Alien movies are the greatest in my book
