I'm sorry ... but did anyone else think this was the WORST movie ever?

Poorly written, executed, directed?

I was pretty let-down, considering the cast. I just rarely dislike movies this much. Am I alone, here?

Eh, movies get a WHOLE lot worse...this was actually one of the better films I've seen in years. I thought Peggy's dialogue, while sitting in the car with the dog trainer, was just excellent, and so touching. How many people's words really match their reality? It might be the rarest thing there is. Sure, the movie took a dark turn, but so do people's lives, sometimes. Nobody is all one way, all the time.

Judging by your screen name, maybe a movie about a middle aged woman undergoing an identity crisis isn't something you can appreciate. To each his/her own.

I quite enjoyed it. Sorry. I know it's no Saw II or Big Momma's House but it has its good points.

Not alone. I didn't walk out, but my wife and I were both puzzled by what in the world it was supposed to be. I suspect if we had known that it would be as pointless at the end as it was throughout maybe we would have walked out.

How did she plan to support herself as an activist if she didn't have a job?

What real person not in need of serious help would take 15 dogs home and let them have the run of the place?

What rpninosh would accuse her neighbor of killing her dog because it got into his garage (speculation really, but seems likely Pencil found the snail poison -- by the way, *snail* poison?) and ate something that was stored away?

What rpninosh would go ape because a dog which had *bitten* her badly and killed another dog was euthanized? Is she nuts? No, not nuts -- even crazy people wouldn't do that -- poorly drawn is more like it.

I don't know anyone who would do any of that stuff. I know a share of vegetarians and one vegan, and I'm a vegetarian myself, and her reaction to Newt's rejection of her sexual advance was unbelievable! She needed to be institutionalized and medicated -- because someone wouldn't go to bed with her, she decided to make people who trusted her regret their trust.

Laura Dern's performance was enjoyable. The other main characters were also well acted, including Newt (Neut?). But what was the point? Someone had to greenlight this turkey. In heaven's name, why?

This movie in some respects reminded me of Punch Drunk Love which I also loved, but this was even better. Basically, we have two quirky characters "finding themselves," but if you don't get the character, then you would not like the movie. Molly Shannon was me, to a great extent, and I completely understand a person going a little nuts when you find out what happens to animals and what little you can actually do about it. The reconciliation in the end was also appropriate. You realize you aren't going to change the world and settle for the small victories. She followed her heart and became a real person - not the people pleaser she was before. The other characters were hilarious because they were so much like real people. People who just don't "get it," and who never will. And you become reconciled to that as well. Obviously, this reviewer was one of those.

I agree the screenplay was very inconsistant.
At times the characters felt like caricatures...
It could have been so much better!

I was appalled at the way this movie sent its message - it was the first movie I ever came out of wanting to warn people not to go see it - it was the worst!! there are so many reasons - it was inappropriate, violent, dishonest - I could go on and on, but if I didn't know any better, I would say PETA was behind this story, the way it evolved and the message that it was sending - very surprising and not at all what the reviews state - was there any comedy at all??? it just got more bizarre and many walked out before it ended. I rescue animals and support many sanctuaries, but I can tell you, even they would be offended at this movie. YUCK!!!!!

reply

No. I liked this movie very much. "Dune" was the worst movie ever. More recently, "The Holiday" was pretty bad too.

I'm sorry but you are wrong. This is a terrific movie and the people who say otherwise miss the point. At the end Peggy has moved on and found herself and her community;she is lierally and figuratively on the right bus. She even influenced her uptight boss and find love, personified in his new relationship with the dog Snowball. What a wondeful film. You missed so much.

reply

If Peggy was on the right bus, she did not know how to interact or communicate with "her" people. I found the movie boring and pathetic, nothing like what the trailer implied.
