Not only about animals

First and foremost I want to say that while I enjoyed this movie, I think it had its share of flaws that hold it back in many ways. But I want to talk about the message that it is putting across and I think people are somewhat overstating certain aspects of it. There is no denying that the movie deals with the idea of cruelty to animals, and people's relationship to animals but thats only half of it. I think this movie uses Molly Shannon's character's passion and love for animals as a placeholder for all sorts of different passions we hold. It is perfectly stated in Shannon's narration at the end of the movie, as she talks about other people's more common passions in light of her own. I think what the movie tries to get across is that there are people who hold close things that we might find either trivial or silly and that we shouldn't be so dismissive of them. Really this movie could have worked if she was really passionate about child labor in china or something like that. Bad example, I'm sure, but I hope you understand my point. All in all, Shannon puts in a very good performance but the plot seems to wander for awhile without making much progress. I'd say rent it if you enjoy any of the creator's other work.

Wilkee, you are displaying exactly the same kind of attitudes that this movie points out as hypocritical.

Because child labor in China is important to YOU, you believe that others should find it equally important.

This movie is about not being so judgmental. The most obnoxious people in this movie are those who try to force others to be concerned with things that interest themselves, instead of accepting other people's interests and concerns.

I don't think that's what they were saying. I think Wilkee meant that the topic of animal cruelty in this film is interchangeable with any number of causes that people feel passionately about; child labor was just an example.
