Did anyone else think...?

Did anyone else think that this movie was going to be a tongue-in-cheek approach making fun of dog owner/animal lover types? I did for about the first half of the movie, because the characters were so utterly ridiculous, I thought it was going to get more and more obvious as it went along. But then I realised that it was going for the "person finding themselves" approach, which made me realize how much this movie sucked.

ALWAYS read the book first.

I tended to feel it accomplished both poking fun at animal rights activists and PETA haters while being a story about finding where one belongs. If you want an obvious critique of the naive and sometimes hypocritical philosophies of animal lovers, look no further than a woman who will try to adopt a dozen dogs to bring to her one bed and bath suburban home while trying hopelessly to spare the life of a dog who attacks her and other animals. Or a film where a woman contemplates murder in revenge for the accidental poisoning of her pet. Sure, maybe the quest for identity is a bit over used in film but it is something of an important issue in life. I certainly did not feel the meshing of comedy and drama made it a "suck" but gave it more than a single note to repeatedly strike. Besides, there's always "Best in Show" for good natured mockery of animal lovers.
