question about a dog breed

hey guys, i'm not really on messageboards so i figured this would be a good place to turn to as any. i've been seeing more dogs lately that kind of have the body of a golden retriever (larger and fluffy), but with black fur, and usually a white snout/muzzle, with brown mixed in also. what type of dog is that? they're really cute. i'm not really that knowledgable regarding canines so thank you.

I think the dog you are refering to is a bernese mountain dog. They are larger than a retriever but i think the coloring is what you mentioned. Here is a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernese_mountain_dog

Bernese Mountain dogs have a kind of stocky body, like a St. Bernard or Newfoundland, and are as furry, but aren't quite as large, though larger than a Golden. My uncle had one and they used to be very unusual, but I've been seeing more too, if that's the breed of dog that you mean. The previous poster named the breed and provided a pic in the link.

yes guys! that's it, thank you very much! i think those are very cute and from what i've seen have great dispositions. you guys rock! wow, according to wikipedia, they have a relatively short life span, that's sad =(

You're right. My uncle's dog, Chassie, was old at the age of six, had older dog health problems, while my little Cairn Terrier was nearly 19 when I lost him. Larger dogs, like Great Danes or Newfoundlands don't live as long. Very sad. And they are supposed to have good dispositions, which my uncle's dog did not. But I think that this is unusual, since I have seen more of them, these days, with families and kids.
