I really enjoyed The Year of the Dog, one of the best movies I have seen recently.
This movie remindme movies like About Schmith, Office Space and in some extent Pushing Tin.

Those are excellent recommendations – at least the first two, I haven't watched "Pushing Tin" yet.
A couple more animal films for grownups I'd recommend:
"Wendy and Lucy" with Michelle Williams
"Red" with Brian Cox (not the Bruce Willis thriller)
"A Dog Year" with Jeff Bridges
Chuck & Buck, also written by Mike White is a perfect companion piece to this charming bitter sweet movie. Both have the similar quirky, oddball characters that are borderline slightly deranged or obsessive.
In Kidman's case, it's nice to see her lately immovable forehead participating in her performance - Rabbit Hole Review, Variety.
