Why was this cancelled?

I'm assuming it had low ratings. I loved the show, but I was 20 when it first aired, so I wasn't ABC Family's target audience.

Ratings were still good, not at their highest levels but still good for the network. And a good sized % of the ratings drop had to do with them pulling eps from ABC network (the non-cable channel) so those of us who didn't have cable only had 3 days (went from 2 weeks to 3 days available online) to watch on the ABCFamily website or not get to see eps.

According to several of the producers the network had already green-lit their 4th (Final) season, so they plotted things out for 2 year arch - thus the huge plot holes opened and left unanswered in season 3, but after the season wrapped they were told that the network was going to shift their programming - less scifi more "real/reality", and XY was being cut and Secret Life of (teenager something???) show was the going to take over on their slot and new shows were being brought in.
Everyone involved with the show was shocked it was suddenly dropped the way it was and weren't happy they couldn't go back and rework the final episodes to try and close some holes - they'd finished filming but the final episodes hadn't aired yet, there would have been time to tweek some things but the network didn't want to put any money into any rework.

Because people who run the networks are stupid. They rely on numbers and not people themselves.

I've only just recently started watching kyle xy and I cannot believe they finished it how it did. We just found out that Cassidy was his brother and that's it!!!! That just left me wanting more obviously. Some tv producers don't have a clue when they are onto a good thing. Another big disappointed viewer I'm afraid.....Loved the programme....hate that it ended like it did.
