How was this movie?
Troy is a cute name
Unfortunaterly not too good IMHO. I saw this at a pre-release dealy that usually has better films and was pretty disappointed. I can see some poeple liking it though. If you want a really light (***NOT DEEP***) whimiscally charming sort of thing of one person helping another or are into the comedy of, for example, in the movie "Finding Forester" when Connery talks like a homey, you'll probably find some of the Morgan Freeman scenes funny...

On the whole I liked the movie. Granted Morgan Freeman isn't chewing up the scenery so saying "a change of pace" is getting pretty granular. But it was a change of pace for the man America would most like to be our President. The character he plays is a bit shallow (an actor? shallow?), seems pretty useless without his handlers and may or may not be in a somewhat state of denial regarding his career. I don't know Morgan Freeman IRL so I can't attest to the parallels. However, Freeman's career hasn't been in a 4 yr slump that's for sure.
It never occurred to me until someone else pointed out the parallel to Lost In Translation. LiT hold the ennui, if you would. LiT tho, had the two "slit-my-wrists-already" characters against the energy of Tokyo. Contrast with this film: The energy of the two characters against the less than exciting South-Central LA backdrop. LiT wins in that respect.
Scarlet was a great character. I found it interesting that she's Spanish. There's either a tremendous backstory in how a Spaniard presumably well off enough to fly to the US, applies for a corporate job, and still green card issues. Or someone threw in a very implausible line of dialog to account for the fact that Vega speaks like the Spaniard she is and not Mexican. Or, she's Mexican but claims to be Spanish-not that uncommon but still leaves room for an "error" entry on IMDB.
I think this movie was fun for Freeman. Since he was Exec Producer, I hope so. He stretched more than he really has in years, oddly. Playing the gay construction company Admin Asst, mimicking Lee, all that. I mean how long has it been since Freeman's played something besides the broken down or on his way out voice of wisdom and restraint? Even here, that's his primary role. But as the Actor, he gets to display some chops we really haven't seen from him since-maybe ever?
I agree with some that-for less than 90 minutes-it really dragged in some places. Still, the final reel was redemptive; starting with the Big D cameo to his realization that what Scarlet predicted of their meeting was the more likely scenario. As in LiT, they took from the other person, things they needed to make themselves more whole from that point on. Unlike, LiT, the abiguity of their departure doesn't take center stage so much. We know what the Actor said to Scarlet. What is less clear is what the future portends for them. Does Scarlet get the job with the Actor's help? Will the Actor actually commit? Then again, the Actor already told us (and Scarlet) how much that really mattered.
I know the reviews were mixed, but I actually enjoyed this movie very much. If you don't already know, it stars Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega in a Lost In Translation-esque dramedy about two people who meet unexpectedly and have a big impact on each other's lives. It's not the most original film, but I relly did dig this one. I recommend it, especially if you like talky indies. You can read my full review at my blog (link below)

I can't believe some of the very negative reviews of the film. I mean EW gave it a D+!! Its far from a great fil or an even very good film. But its a light, breezy, feel-good affair that has several moments of genuine humor. There are a few scenes in which I thought were pointless and there are some moments in which I found to be a little hard to believe. But the good outweighed the bad IMO and the performances by Morgan and Paz were fantastic. The moviegoers in the theater I saw the movie were laughing throughout and appeared tohave a good time and they ALL stayed for the credits even after the run of extra scenes had stopped. Its a shame Morgan doesn't get the chance to show this side of himself on screen more often. But I suppose no one is writing many screen plays for 60 year old actors, particularly 60 year old black actors.

I thought it was pretty bad. Even at 82 minutes it was
unbelievably padded, with "cutesy" scenes dragging on
for an eternity (the car wash segment. Why did they
pay Ted Turner a bundle for clips from "The Yearling?"
Ridiculous and pointless). The script was horribly
structured, the dialogue cliche (transparent metaphors
througout) and the direction clumsy. I DID like Vega
and her character, but Freeman was playing Freeman and
simply yawned his way through his "performance."
Amusingly, there's enough product placement in this thing to
fund a blockbuster. Why would major retailers like Target
bother? And why was Freeman even involved in this film,
which played like a first-time student film? Weird.
Could've/should've been so much more, considering the actors.
Actually, in the credits, it mentions that they didn't make a dime off product placement in this movie.
sharea brilliant film!
i dont understand how ppl consider this a light or a bad film...is the quintessence of the human being...meet, mirror and feel
The acting was perfect!
Breath of fresh air.
