And in American Gangster the head cop with the moustache had a Masonic pin on. So the inference is that Masonic affiliation was more blatant in prior decades (in the police or otherwise)?
shareSort of. Not more blatant, but certainly more widespread - where I grew up, most of the men past a certain age (like guys who would have been Duvall's age in the 1980's) were Masons. We moved to a completely different town hundreds of miles away when I was 13, and it was the same. There was a time in US history when almost everybody who was somebody was a Freemason - unless they were Catholic, in which case they would more likely be in the Knights of Columbus. Masons are hardly a dying breed, but I strongly suspect their membership (at least as a portion of society) is not what it was...
Also...from what we can see, there's a strong chance Duvall is being buried in a Jewish cemetary even though - if I remember correctly - the party/ceremony for his son was at a Catholic church. This guy liked to cover his bases!
