Drew references from Silent Hill? SPOILERS

Did they copy the feel of it? The first thirty minutes feels so.

as a Silent Hill fan, I really think the movie copied a lot of key elements from Silent Hill. The industrial background music, white noise in phone (vs the radio static) , the long hair lady pointing (the two monsters in Silent Hill 4), also the vibrating bodies..

reply

Now, I haven't seen Silent Hill, but as fans of the movie, what do you think of Re-Cycle then?

reply

They're referring to the game series, not the film. I haven't seen this film but have heard it was heavily influenced by Silent Hill (the games, especially SH4).

reply

The scene that remind me most of SH was the cliff, when the path ends with the cliff.

reply

Yes they are clearly influenced by Silent Hill especially Silent Hill 4: The Room since the characters are similar in the sense that the lead is a writer(similar to the lead of the game which is something like a journalist or photographer) and lives in an apartment. And then the noise in the phone; if you are a true Silent Hill fan, then you should notice that they simply remixed the sounds used in the E3 trailer of Silent Hill 4.

reply

Actually I felt the Pang boys were really 'inspired'(in the Quentin Tarantino way) by Wizard Of Oz and Spirited Away. With some minor 'inspirations' by Dawn Of The Dead and Avalon.

Pretty pictures but storywise a mess of stolen ideas.

you obviously haven't played silent hill, then. it's pretty blatantly inspired by the fourth game in the series, at least aesthetically. and if you've seen both this film and that game, then there's absolutely no mistaking it. very similar music, and a couple sound effects (one "moan" and the static in the phone) lifted directly from the game. the hovering/flying ghosts are very similar. s

oh, and i love your signature, by the way. one of my favorite hicks quotes!

reply

Haven't played Silent Hill. True. But I've seen my sister play it. But seriously though all the titles I mentioned were in there. Some scenes were directly copied from those movies. Like the leading lady fading away. Directly copied from Spirited Away were Chihiro also fades(and procedes to look at her hand) because she's in the spiritworld. She then eats something and becomes solid again.

And thank you :) I love Bill Hicks. Visionary comic.

oh, i'm sure it has many other inspirations besides just the silent hill series. it reminds me a little bit of labyrinth in some ways, although a more direct reference would be, as you said, the wizard of oz, or maybe alice in wonderland.

nut yeah. it wasn't a great film. interesting to look at, it held my attention, and for once there was a "twist" ending that wasn't totally obvious, nor did ruin the entire movie that came before it, but other than that, there's not a whole lot else to say about it. kinda felt a bit anti-abortion to me, also, which left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

reply

I felt it drew inspiration from a lot of video games. Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, and Silent Hill to be specific.

reply

Resident Evil? I don't really see any reference to Resident Evil...
And, regarding to Fatal Frame, well... Yes, probably, or is it just because of the stereotyped long-haired scary woman? whoa.
As for Silent Hill... I must say that Silent Hill is not the only videogame/movie that uses that noise/mourning formula. The idea might have become popular with these games, but I don't think it's original. Don't get me wrong: I'm a huge Silent Hill and Fatal Frame fan. I just try to be objective.

I also saw some references to Silent Hill. I've never played the game, so I just can draw references from the movie.
e.g. I had to think of Silent Hill when Xu Xun sees "the end of the world" shortly after her entry into the re-cycle world. Or the idea that you can walk through a crowd of zombies as long as you don't make a sound to draw their attention.

But after all I didn't feel bored or angry about the copying, I really liked Re-Cycled. In my opinion this film copied some things but it wasn't trying to be sorta twin or reflection, so I can live with that.

Yeah, it's visually and also storywise Silent Hill all the way... So much, that Akira Yamaoka could actually SUE the movie makers. :P My real problem with this movie, that it's also a "dumbed down" kind of Silent Hill. Less scary, less mystic, and almost EVERYTHING is explained to you. "This is a world forgotten things. Those are unborn children left by they parents. Those are left toys." etc.

Also even if the imagery is cleverly stolen from SH (even the main actress looks like a LOT like the girl in Silent Hill 4, LOL) the horror part is somehow less imaginative, less scary, and the story is WAY less mystic.

Silent Hill has mysteries all the way. What this this city? (Is this Hell? Or a real city gone wrong? Or something between?) Who are those persons? Who are those monsters?

Here everything it explained...

Pity.

Still, watchable movie.

BadSec - I have just wached this film and you are saying exactly what im thinking. I really likd the begining (untill she goes for a meal with her ex-lover) and the last scene (back in her flat). The effects where great and I really liked the look of the different 'areas'.

The same SH4 'phone' noises and SH4 trailer 'ghost groans' are used to good effect I thought, but yeah, a watered down Silent Hill series style film that could have been goddamn fantastic.

reply

It seems these days everything gets compared to Silent Hill. I love the series but you cant credit it with the birth of this kind of style as that in itself was heavily inspired by Francis Bacon, David Lynch and NIN. Don`t be so quick to label everything into categories of convenience. Different cultures have years and years of layered beliefs, superstitions and imagery that work their way into our media and slowly become part of the creative subconscious. Just because you can correlate some themes or imagery between two pieces of work does not mean the person has referenced said media (though they may have), more often they have both drawn upon similar collectives.

Referring back to the Spirited Away reference, there was also the scene on the bridge in which she had to hold her breath. Exactly the same as in this (but not on a visual level, obviously).

I loved this movie, and I can definately see Silent Hill qualities from the movie and games. This movie also made me think of three other films although they have nothing to do with each other, they still have the same feel for me. They were Mirrormask, Pan's Labyrinth, and The Neverending Story. I know it's strange, but I thought of those movies the whole time I was watching this. I know that whenever something started to "erode" in this movie, I kept thinking of the "Nothing" in The Neverending Story. And naming the child was like giving a name to the Childlike Emporess in TNES.

The sounds from the phone are the exact same ones the ghosts make in SH4- Just watch the game intro and see. Sure they got some ideas from here and there but I still enjoyed the movie.
