All 200 of them?

Was it a coincidence that there were 200 workers at the plant in Mexico and 200 kids Benedict's $72 million "donation" helped?

I remember initially thinking they gave the $72 million to the factory workers...... but that was a decade ago and the movie is making the rounds on HBO again so I'll have to see it again to make sure.

They gave the money to the charity that Danny, then Rusty, saw on Oprah - the one that made Danny cry.

(EDIT: I corrected the "They have the money..." to "They GAVE the money...")

Yeah, that part I get.

It's just that sly look Danny gives Terry when he says "All 200 of them" that made me wonder if he's talking about the factory workers instead\as well.

I thought they were related too when I first saw the movie. They made a point to state that there were 200 factory workers, then the "all 200 of them" comment about the charity kids.

I thought it was a way to set Terry up for some kind of public humiliation, where he's on Oprah, she asks him about why he chose those children and he goes on about how it was the look in the children's eyes and how much he cared about all the good that the camp had done... then it's revealed that he didn't donate to a children's charity but bought the Mexican factory with the workers who were just rioting because of low pay and poor conditions.

It'd be obvious that someone scammed him, because he'd have no reason to go on Oprah and completely make up something so pointless, but his explanation about visiting and seeing the kids would be revealed as a lie.

Just got done watching it on HBO. They were talking about a camp for kids, definitely not the Mexican workers. I think it was just a coincidence for the number.

It must be a pretty big camp to have 200 kids though.

I agree and I completely understand. It's just that sly look and the pause he gives when he says "All 200 of them" made me wonder for a second whether there was some double meaning behind it....

But I guess Danny was just saying in a smart-ass way that if he wants his money back he can go get it from 200 impoverished kids.

I always took it as what was supposed to be funny was that it was 72 million dollars going to a camp that only serves 200 kids. It's a hilariously unnecessary amount of money for that number of kids for a camp that was already having a positive impact.

reply

The dollar figure never made sense. $72 million is probably more than enough to operate that camp for the next century.
