Why oh why Tracy Morgan?
This would be such an awesome show if that wooden buffoon Tracy Morgan could act. He totally ruins the entire series with what he calls 'acting'. It brings the entire show and it's writing down.

shareI feel like you may not understand the character that Tracy Morgan is playing. If you watch the evolution of the character it would indicate that he played the part almost flawlessly(as did most of the actors on the show). There is a huge difference in the Tracy Jordan character from the first few eps to the 3rd season and even into the final 2 seasons.
I also have the feeling that you've seen very little if any of Tracy Morgan's other work. Its cool if you don't like Tracy Jordan, but it may be unfair to blame Tracy Morgan's performance for that dislike.
"I'll show you Heaven, if you let me."
Sorry, dead wrong. Tracy Morgan made frequent, egregious errors of acting technique in the first four seasons of the show. It wasn't him playing Tracy Jordan as a slow-witted fool. That was just Morgan screwing up as an actor.
Baldwin, Fey, McBrayer, etc. have all talked about Morgan was extremely bad about remembering his lines. It's so obvious from watching the show: those slack cues where he just stares blankly at his scene partner are him trying to remember his lines. He wasn't acting.
But not the last three seasons?
He was on his game in season one; and progressively stopped trying as the show went on. The Emmy loss was the point where he completely stopped caring.
Also, your little "cue" thing (a term no one in the industry actually uses) that you continually bring up means nothing because there's an editorial cut after almost every line of dialogue. You have no clue what is a natural pause vs. what is tightened or expanded in the editing for time reasons.

He is awful. The man has no believable acting emotions, and his line readings are stilted, perfunctory regurgitations. I'm sure as a writer and a stand up performer he is quite adequate, but as an actor, he is just appalling. And I mean REALLY appalling.
What were they thinking? It's so clearly a form of friend nepotism giving him a job. But why did it have to be an on camera job? This isnt cable tv, there has to be some limits drawn. And putting your friends who can't act in front of the camera is one of them.
It wasn't really an act of nepotism. The basic narrative premise of inserting this ghetto-black comedian into a sketch comedy show was sound. Doubtless Tina got that idea from having worked with Morgan at SNL, so the natural thing to do was cast him in the role. Now, should it have occurred to her that the ineptitude and lack of professionalism she was parodying in Tracy Jordan were things she'd have to deal with as real production problems in working with Tracy Morgan? Absolutely. But Tina had never run a sitcom before. It was a rookie mistake.
It's really Lorne Michaels' fault. He should have stepped in and insisted that Morgan take his role seriously, work with an acting coach on his line readings, be reliably off-book before shooting, etc. They couldn't threaten to write him out of the show, of course, but they could have leaned on him. Apparently they never did and he only got better as an actor when he cleaned up his drug problems on his own.
"Be realiaby off book before shooting"??
Seriously, dude? No television actor is ever "off book".
They get the script three days before shooting starts,
there isn't time to commit the whole thing to memory.
They learn what they need to get through *that day*...
Do you know *anything* about television production?
Their sides are never more than an arm's length away.
Listen and learn.

Yeah, thats a great personal problem you seem to have with wab, you should discuss it one day. Somewhere else. With someone else.
And your argument that Tracy Morgan is (apparently) an acceptable actor is...?
Good lord, how many sock puppets do you have, Wubby?

To be fair, Morgan's acting on 30 Rock finally became acceptably adequate in Seasons 6 and 7. He was at least sharp on his cues and didn't chew every phoneme as if it was sorghum.
i never watched this show but glanced a few clips. i dont get tracy Morgan and wonder why he's ever on the silver screen. there's plenty so-called comedians that dont make me laugh but morgan causes me to cringe. basing this on his career not the show.
racial alert...i'm black
He was the worst part of the show. Can't watch it because of him.
shareHe was cast because Tina had worked with him on SNL and she knew him to be a stereotype of the typical ghetto comedian. Sometimes, when you're creating a show, it's easier to just pick a character off the shelf ready-made and plug them in. When the creators of Taxi were creating the show, for instance, they just hired Kaufman for his funny foreigner character and made it into Latka.
It wasn't very original of Tina to do that with Tracy, but she had never created a sitcom before. Had never written anything longer than a sketch. She had no experience creating fully-fleshed characters from scratch.
tru-dat, lose that goof, he's like a black sore thumb on alec balled-one.
shareTracy Morgan isn't a good actor and that's exactly why his character is funny. They know he was bad and that was the whole point. Tracy Jordon doesn't seem so far removed from Tracy Morgan. Listening to his interviews on Howard stern is all the proof anyone needs.
shareHe was the best part of the show.
shareBollocks to that. The man is a completely untalented hack when it comes to acting. I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can actually defend him.
shareNo, he finally got a clue and his acting in Seasons 6 and 7 was sometimes quite good. There were a couple of scenes in the last two seasons where he played that trademark 30 Rock undercutting dialogue as well as Fey or Baldwin ever did. Go back and watch the S7 episode where they're trying to get Kenneth a date.
Granted, in the first five seasons his acting ranged from mediocre to just awful.
For $50,000+ a week, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that he should have been given less than five weeks to master his craft. Instead you argue that after five yrs, his becoming merely adequate justifies his employment and paycheck.
Do you really think that a five (yes, five!) yr learning curve justifies the paychecks he has been cashing? Coz I certainly don't.
I'm totally not defending his unprofessional "acting" during the first five seasons. I was merely pointing out that he finally did get a clue about how to play Tracy Jordan in the last two seasons.
shareI actually thought Tracy's best acting series was when he did the dual role in Season 7 as Mitt Romney's running mate, Bob Gunston. His delivery and timing were sharp and very solid.
shareYou are completely wrong. And I think you are lying about your previous statement that Alec Baldwin slammed him. There are many clips online of Fey talking about how amazing he was at improv on the show. Tracy Jordan is and idiot. It's the entire point. BYE, BYE BITEY!
shareYou sound like a pretentious peehole. You are trashing him for being a lazy, terrible actor for his role as a character that could be described as a lazy, terrible actor.
Sounds to me like Tracy is doing exactly what they brought him to 30 Rock to do. Quit being a loser about it.
Gotta agree with Brandon. Being a lazy and terrible actor is what made the character funny to me. I thought it was hilarious that most everyone in the show was confused by him. He is obviously what passes for entertainment in the mainstream world of the show, and that baffles Liz. It is a pride-swallowing endeavor for Liz to keep that kind of low-end talent happy for the sake of everyone else keeping their jobs.
That is what the show was poking fun at when it came to the character of Tracy Jordan - Much too often, crap sells, and without it, there is no show. Tracy Morgan feels perfect for that role. Even if the actor messes up, it can still work, because the character he is portraying is written to confuse the hell out of everyone else in the cast anyway.
I am not really sure a better actor would have succeeded as well in the role. I would wager that many of the screw-ups were left in for comedic effect to further display the lack of talent that the character possesses. Even the character cant believe that he is as rich and popular as he is, which is probably not far off of what Tracy Morgan really thinks (his stand up routine is terrible, yet people will still pay to see it.)
Personally, his lack of talent played very well with the talent that surrounded him.
hello great meeting i drink coffee please
shareLOL he's never do Shakespeare but IMHO he is funny and played the role well. The industry is filled with people who are marginal actors (Keanu Reeves) who have big careers. So what not everyone is perfect they last 7 season with him so he couldnt have been as bad as some of you are saying.
-only uneducated minds are not open to any ideas other than their own.
I've been watching the series on Netflix for a couple of weeks now, and I'm at the end of season 4, and despite generally not being a fan of Tracy Morgan, I have to say he's one of my favorite parts of the show so far along with Jack and Liz. I completely agree with what BrandonH321 & zero1733 said a few comments above me. I'm not sure you have a good grip on the character of Tracy Jordan because Tracy plays it, dare I say, perfectly? I mean, just look at the fictional movies his character has been a part of: "Fat Bitch", "Sherlock Homie", "Who Dat Ninja", "Black Cop, White Cop", "Honky Grandma Be Trippin"... His character is meant to be so ridiculously outrageous, lazy, and as you say, a "buffoon" to the point where everyone wonders why the hell this guy still has a job. That's the whole point!

I am happy to say that the character Morgan plays doesn't spoil the series for me. I have been binge watching on Netflix and have found myself lulled into a feeling of enjoyment by the sound of his voice. His character is a big selfish idiot and I still like him. Morgan's delivery is strange and yet it doesn't matter to me.
However, I can sure understand how he could spoil the show if he grates on your nerves. I have the same problem with several characters to varying degrees. I don't enjoy very much about Jenna and can't bear her fiance Paul (fastforward quick). Kenneth doesn't appeal to me and I hate his homespun "wisdom". I lost interest in Hazel when she went crazy
Agreed on Jenna, Paul, and Hazel.
