An enduring theme in this show is Liz Lemon's plainness, but Tina Fey's just adorable in it, and her figure is awesome. It spoils the illusion, at least try to take some of the polish off her.
I notice when they have her in flashbacks to college etc. they make an effort to make her plain.
I can see your point, Tina Fey is pretty and has great figure. But for example, my girlfriend is pretty and has a great figure, yet, like Liz Lemon, she struggles to be feminine and sexy.
It really takes the edge off, I'm not kidding. She can't pose for photos properly, can't move gracefully, can't help but tell me what's going on with her stomach or her cold, and she has a nervous habit of laughing out loud to bad news. She's also a fan of rugby tops and pints of lager.
I'm not complaining, but while her looks and figure are stunning, she comes off as plain.

She genuinely sounds hilarious (I have an ex gf who would, as a coping mechanism, react to tragedy with snorting laughter), but yes I do get your point.
Thanks for reading. I was actually nervous posting 'my girlfriend is pretty' coz you never how people will respond. But since you've had the experience too, all is good.
Yeah, I never accepted the gag that Liz is "swarthy" and unattractive. She is indeed very attractive even in angles that are supposed to be unflattering.
I don't buy the recurring joke that she eats all the junk food she has access to with her figure either.
Sadly, I don't a real "plain" actress would have worked in the role. It's always the really good-looking actors that pretend to be unattractive that get the acclaim.
Tina Fey deserves all the awards and acclaim she received, but this whole gag about her supposed unattractiveness just begs too much suspension of disbelief and is way too tongue-in-cheek.
so she almost waddles. I've watched only 2 seasons but I do not agree they make her out to be "plain" at all. In only 2 seasons, she has worn a fancy dress multiple times and people said "wow" etc. She just a) doesn't look like a model (she has a scar or something near the left side of her mouth that makes her lips move strangely sometimes for instance), b) is more neurotic than confident about her looks and her relationships with men and c) doesn't dress stylishly, esp for NYC.
It is true about the flashbacks, but YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT ...
The flashbacks are shown from Liz's own internal point-of-view. They are not meant to show REALITY. So, again, the flashbacks show that Liz is not self-confident in her looks, not the Liz is plain.
Despite Tina's intellectual brilliance, most women are vain about their looks. While she is very attractive, she's not super-sexy. Somehow, her shrewish character attracts some very attractive men which is unlikely. I think it is a Tina Fey fantasy. In reality, she is married to her husband Mr. Fey who is no Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Jason Sudekis, Steve Martin, etc. - all of which somehow found Liz Lemon so desirable. Even Dennis is very good-looking when he keeps his mouth shut.
Matt Damon was fat and plain af by the time he took this role. Jason Sudekis is a chinless wonder. He is not at all out of Liz or Tina's league. Steve Martin is old. Dennis is not hotter than Tina Fey. None of these men were out of her league looks wise. Matt Damon twenty years ago would be.
Jon Hamm being too attractive for her was a plot point. At no point did she suggest they were equals in that department. Or that was a normal thing to happen.
Only one that really would stand out is Criss and I think they made clear why that works. Liz, ultimately, needs to be the provider. Criss, ultimately, likes being provided for. He wouldn't get what he has in Liz with almost anyone else. She's a Type A succesful woman who is lazy at home and just wants to watch Star Wars and eat in bed. Not that common a combination. And both things appeal to him.
I don't want to profile but most ghosts are white.
Matt Damon was not fat. Pudgier than before, but still not fat, since he was quite thin in his youth. Men age like fine wine, so aging is actually an improvement. As for plain, open to interpretation, but I reckon most people won't think he's plain.
Also, men's looks are secondary to their socio-economic status, unlike women whose looks are given higher priority than the state of their careers - look at the desperate measures women have to go through to maintain their figures and their faces wrinkle-free. Most men won't care much whether a woman has a successful career or not, but he will care more about whether she is attractive and pleasant. A woman will care a great deal more whether her match has a successful career and an ability to handle difficult situations than if he is good-looking.
All that said, Liz being that attractive to men is far-fetched, considering she does have gross habits and is a rather bitter shrew. A successful, attractive pilot and a successful, attractive lawyer are actually slightly above her league. After all, one of them was dating the Anna Chlumsky character.
The Steve Martin character was supposed to be a billionaire or something close to that. It was only when he was proven an insane fraud that he became unattractive. Otherwise, it is common to see old, rich men with younger, beautiful women. Money does buy beautiful women's companionship, although not necessarily love. But if you have enough billions, she can even pretend to love you.
The coupling with Criss made the most sense - he is an unambitious version of Liz - nerdy and unkempt. His good looks are just a by-product, but still real-life women like Liz don't get that many suitors, even if they're couch potatoes with six packs. They may sleep with her but not offer a commitment. And just because a person may be unemployed and out of shape, it doesn't mean that suddenly his or her standards for what's attractive suddenly go out the door. IRL, a character like Criss may mooch off Liz, but that doesn't mean he finds her hot.
Yes, this is a show, so a suspension of disbelief is required. I guess people just won't watch the show unless some fairy tale romances are thrown in once in a while.
I'm not a man. If you look like an adonis but has no money or acts like a surfer high on weed, the attraction fades very quickly. It's a generalization but generally true - women value status in men, and men value looks in women. Not really rocket science and it's universal.
It's not that she's hideous. She just isn't someone who will ever put a lot of effort into her looks. And she works in entertainment, where the standards are higher. The point about Liz being a model west of the Allegheny is funny but valid. It isn't that people outside of NYC or LA are hideous. But the same level of upkeep isn't expected.
