disapointing ending

I watched this film last night. I felt that the ending was a let down, I always thought he would go back to Japan and track down the girl and run off with her..
What a disapointment, Yeh, there was a little twist with his wife writing that letter, but we never found out how she knew about the girl. Maybe, after his return first time, he acted strangely so she figured he slept with a Japanese girl. The film was beautifically shot but it seemed to lack some content, like parts were missed out on the cutting room floor???? I was really disapointed.

haha i know what you mean. the whole film i was thinking he would go back to her and find her.

then again, it's not very realistic to leave your wife of many years and first love for some girl you hardly know. so maybe it makes sense for him to be in love with his wife til the end.

and for her knowing, maybe she just knew. woman intuition thingy.

I was kinda disappointed too, but it's really the ending of the novel.

I've just read the novel, and to tell you the truth, I love the writing. Subtle and romantic, it's great as a novel, but too plain to be made into a movie.

I don't care if it's the ending of the novel. I'm not reading a book, I'm watching a movie here. The movie ending doesn't work. In fact, the entire last third or so of the movie is a huge letdown imho.

Not every movie has a happy ending.

i personally loved the ending.

Me too. :)

Me too, it was so romantic :)

disappointing start, middle and end. yawn. i would like that precious 107 minutes of my life back. when i have trouble staying awake during a movie, something's just not working.

reply

What? People here are disappointed by the ending because he DIDN'T run off with someone elses whore?? (= concubine)
The only way this movie could have had a good ending is if he stayed with his wife, and the only way the story could've been GOOD is if he didn't cheat. The wife should've dumped him.

I mostly agree with Frostrose. People found the fact that he didn't go find a girl he hardly knew, never had a conversation with or didn't really love? The only part I found upsetting was the fact that his wife died so young, it was a very sad ending and the fact that she wrote the letter and he realized that she was the love of his life made it even sadder but beautiful at the same time. Only parts I didn't like about the movie is that he cheated and it was a little too long.

total agree with alexfire, that is the same sense i found in the movie. At the end he understood that his real love was his wife, awesome!!!!! I love that end!!!!

the entire movie is about how The Girl (and she's not a whore) brought him to the revelation that Helene was the perfect woman for him.... but tragically she always thought that he longed for The Girl...

it's a classic tragedy
