significance of drinking from his cup

Did I miss something here? Why does the concubine drink from his cup when they first meet...was she trying to seduce him in front of her owner?

I am wondering the same thing. What were the tea customs like during that era? For such a ritualistic custom it did seem to hold some meaning.

I think she was definitely expressing some interest in him with the tea ceremony. Perhaps the culture in Japan was a bit more subtle about such things and women had to be very discreet.

I thought the way she stared at him was a dead giveaway about her true feelings.

She took the cup back, rotated it and drunk from where his lips had been. That's what I saw anyway and it seemed an explicit expression of - well something. It's a funny film, for most of the time it just seemed a very pretty almost self-indulgent exercise but then we have the revelation almost at the end and several tonnes of insight suddenly crash down on you - just going to have to watch it again.
