significance of drinking from his cup
Did I miss something here? Why does the concubine drink from his cup when they first meet...was she trying to seduce him in front of her owner?

shareI am wondering the same thing. What were the tea customs like during that era? For such a ritualistic custom it did seem to hold some meaning.
shareI think she was definitely expressing some interest in him with the tea ceremony. Perhaps the culture in Japan was a bit more subtle about such things and women had to be very discreet.
I thought the way she stared at him was a dead giveaway about her true feelings.

She took the cup back, rotated it and drunk from where his lips had been. That's what I saw anyway and it seemed an explicit expression of - well something. It's a funny film, for most of the time it just seemed a very pretty almost self-indulgent exercise but then we have the revelation almost at the end and several tonnes of insight suddenly crash down on you - just going to have to watch it again.
