Where were Mo and Meggie supposed to live?

I'm reading the book now (after watching the movie - bad idea, I know) and I hoped it might give some clue as to where Mo and Meggie live, because it struck me as odd that a [movie] American and English character who potentially lived in one of their respective countries could get to Italy with such ease. Then in the book it says it was translated from the original German. So are Mo and Meggie from Germany?

I'm only about halfway into the book, and I haven't seen the film for a while so apologies if this has already been brought up.

I don't think it ever says straight out, but I'm quite sure they live in Germany at the beginning of the book.

The book, atleast in English, does not say. I'm not sure about the German version. The book says it takes them a few hours to drive to the aunt's house in Italy. That could place them in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, or France. They do drive a van with Swiss plates, though.

Europe - in comparison with North America - is very compact with a rail pass or a car you can make your way through a few countries much easier than going from one state to another.

I had a friend from France come stay with me once and was surprised at how long it would take to get from one end of the country to the other.
