Greatly flawed, but not too bad.
I read a lot of postings on this film before watching it, and the hatred is pretty evident towards this film. I got this for $1.99 and so either way I wasn't gunna be too upset, hate it or typical Seagal fare. I've seen nearly all of Seagal's films, and I admit they are a pleasure of mine. I enjoy his persona, his arrogance, his tongue in cheek self awareness, and his fast martial artistry (more so the older films but on occasion he does it without a double). Maybe I'm just not a tough enough critic, which is fine, but I did feel the film had a pretty good productive feel to it. The sets looked good, the angles were wide and not confining like a lot of DTV flicks, the fight scenes weren't bad by any means, and the overall atmosphere was very creepy.
However, that will tie into my criticisms of the film.
Now I read the history on the film and I'm aware that it was originally filmed as a dark, horror film, but producers got cold feet and overhauled the film in post. And you can tell that what is presented here is not what the original product was meant to be. The atmosphere is very creepy, dark, foggy and full of things that don't fit an action film dealing with a Government drug weapon and conspiracy. You can easily tell that the CTX sub plot was brain stormed and worked in, and it works as almost an afterthought since the issue of CTX is never resolved at the end of the film or even addressed once all the fights start and are over.
Seagal is again dubbed and it's terrible. It can at times lead to confusion because the dubbed voice sounds similar enough to the "Dwayne" character and at times can be mistaken for the character. In addition the opening scene seems irrelevant to the film, or maybe I just missed it's significance later on?
Overall I did like the film, I'll never watch it again probably, but it wasn't bad and I did appreciate seeing Seagal in a bit of a plot change, or atleast what was originally envisioned as a new plot for him before being changed back to typical Seagal fare. I would actually support seeing the original cut of the film.
