'Deal or No Deal' Ratings Crisis

According to the Futon Critic, the May 7th primetime episode of "The Price Is Right: Million Dollar Spectacular" scored higher ratings than the "Deal or No Deal: Around The World" Estonia episode. And Monday's Philippines episode also brought in low ratings.

Game Show Kingdom reports that "Just two days after setting a new series low for a first-run Monday episode, Wednesday's two-hour episode of "Deal or No Deal" set an all-time low for any first-run episode, scoring a 4.7 Fast Nielsen with an 8 share. "Price" pulled a 5/8."

With Howie hosting the new sydnicated daytime version starting in the Fall, speculation is pointing towards next season being the last for the primetime US edition.

Perhaps as a sign of things to come, "Deal" is bumped this Monday (May 12th) to make way for an extended new "American Gladiators" episode. The third and final "Around the World" episode from South Africa is scheduled for May 14th.

Please let me know if there's some other way we can screw up tonight.

Another (unnamed) rating had DOND beating TPIR in 18-49 demographic, but just barely.

That's the first hour of DOND only. I don't know what was on against it in the second hour.

Meanwhile, TPIR daytime ratings are down 15% from the previous season, but according to an article in Variety, CBS is perfectly happy with that. A 15% drop is better than the 85% drop they could have anticipated had they replaced it with something unknown.

The same is true of nighttime. As long as NBC gets ~1/3rd of the network eyeballs, DOND is safe. But yeah, it's also a safe bet that next season will be last, if they even get that far. If someone pitches a powerhouse series for fall premiere, DOND could be scrapped at the drop of a hat.

Then again, pitches have no better than a 20% chance of living up to their hype.
