Episodes where you think people lied...

I just watched the Amazon episode where the guy has two guides and kills his dog (Season 4 episode 7 - "Alone in the Amazon").

So after doing some thinking, I think the dude is either embellishing or straight up lying. I don't believe that the Amazon campsite that he and his two guides ran into belonged to some murderous psycho. It just seems too strange and random.

Plus, why would one male invite three males (that could over power him if need be) to spend the night with him if he just wanted to kill them? It's not exactly an easy target. One male, ok maybe, but three? He's outnumbered.

I think something else happened. That guy was pretty stupid and put him and his dog in a horrible situation. It's reasonable to assume that he did something that most people would not look favorably on. Who knows what that thing was. But obviously it ended up with him taking off the the canoe and the supplies.

So instead of looking like a bad guy he made up a story about some murderous Amazonian criminal guy who tried to kill him.

Sorry, don't buy it.

I've always been a little suspicious of the shark episode where two people drank sea water and jumped overboard and a girl died of wounds/infections. Like I wouldn't say the two survivors were lying, but it seemed suspicious, especially when they saw a rescue boat and swam to it. Had the sharks lost interest by then?

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

I'm a bit cynical about the show's producers rather than the actual people. I read Steve Callahan's book about being adrift for 76 days and it is different from the epidode in many ways. Check it out if you get a chance.

I haven't read Deb Kiley's book, but I'm curious how faithful ISBA was to her actual story. It's tough to pack all that info into 43 minutes and I suspect that even the interviews are edited to fit along with the shows retelling of events.

I don't have time to jaw with anyone who won't identify himself!

I Get where you're coming from, but Benedict Allen (the guy who from the Amazon) is actually a quite famous adventurer. He's even written a few books and in one called Mad White Giant he wrote about his adventure in Amazon, or what this episode portrays.
The book and the episode are quite different, though. He explains everything thoroughly and you really get to understand and sympathise with him.
I suggest you read it, it's amazing and it will answer all off the questions you have about the episode.

I know your post is super old but I just watched this episode :-)
The miner that invited him to stay so that he could direct him towards El Dorado was not alone. The British guy said he woke up in the middle of the night and heard the miner talking to friends and they were saying that they should just kill him in his sleep.

I did however, think that some of his story was odd and wondered if he embellished or lied.

I hated when he killed his dog, Cashoo!!!
