The Cowardly Trailer Lied As to What the Movie Was Really About

Suburbicon has flopped. Clooney only directed it, wasn't in it, but this coming after a series of films starring him flopped (Tomorrowland, Hail Caesar, Money Monster.) could really, finally mean the end of his career.

Nah.

He's a name, with a fine face. He'll land somewhere. HBO, Showtime, Netflix. And evidently he's made 100 million off his tequila franchise anyway.

Still, there's something aggravating about how Clooney staked himself to make a daring statement with Suburbicon and was then evidently too cowardly to tell audiences he was making it.

As we know now, Suburbicon evidently grafts onto an "old" unproduced Coen Brothers script about murder in 50's suburbia a new plot(written up by Clooney and his partner themselves) about the ostracism and attacks on a black family that moved into white suburbia.

The trailer tells us about the murder plot...but says nothing about the African American family or the racial plot.

And that seems a bit cowardly to me.

Maybe if THAT plot had been sold ..Suburbicon would have seemed more relevant and interesting to see.

Clooney is one of the biggest hacks in hollywood. His talent is far outweighed by his ego. Not surprised he tacked on a social/political plot element, since he's really self important

Why is it "COWARDLY"?
All we hear about today is Racism whether it actually exists or not. (I am no trying to imply that racism doesn't still exist)
Frankly I am sick of the subject being thrown around at every turn.

The time where the movie was set deals with a REAL problem that existed. We have come a long way since then. Yes we still have a way to go.

Frankly I am tired of previews that literally tell the whole movie in a condensed form. There has been a recent effort at trimming down the time on previews.
I like the elements of surprise. The twist ending was quite good.
I see nothing cowardly about the preview. Im glad that this was not just billed as another movie about racism. Frankly I think it would be a turnoff.

BTW, I VERY MUCH LIKED THE MOVIE.
Keep in mind it is kind of a "dark comedy" of the times.

I have no problem with a trailer leaving out a twist or two frankly I appreciate that. But this trailer led you to believe the movie was a dark comedy about a murder in suburbia... The black family portion wasn't really funny in how it was handled or anything comedic at all. It was frankly pointless time wasted on a secondary plot that didn't really need to be there for the main plot to be dealt with. It was a bit like two different movies crammed together one serious and one comedic, the final result was a mess.

We can agree to disagree. The ending surprised me and overall I still consider this a dark comedy.
No racism isnt particularly funny but it is ironic that while everyone was focused on racism, serious crimes were going on unnoticed.

Have you guys considered that many people watch movies without having seen any trailers?

It used to be very common... I don't check out the trailers for most films that I end up seeing... It's more than enough to know the director or main actors...

same here - trailers are useless

reply

Most of the times, they even spoil the movie

reply

Actually for this movie the trailer went beyond useless and was actually harmful to my viewing experience. SPOILER ALERT, the one thing I remembered crystal clear from the trailer was a bloodied Matt Damon eating a white bread sandwich so as soon as I saw the aunt poison that sandwich to give to the boy, I knew Matt Damon would actually end up eating it. Pretty much spoiled the ending for me. Not that I thought it was great to begin with.
