Would never have seen the movie if I read the book first

I hate cheating. I never feel sensitivity to either the man or woman cheating. In the novel, I didn't see it as Dex and Rachel were never together because of Darcy. It just seemed like cheating with no strong back story. Or rather, I didn't feel sympathetic towards Rachel since it wasn't all put together with a neat little bow like the movie, where we see the flashbacks of her and Dex.

The movie made it seem as Darcy was this horrible person who basically picked at Rachel just because she could and that she semi-knew Rachel liked Dex back in law school, making for a much more sympathetic character in Rachel. If I had read the novel first, and all of that didn't come across like the movie, I would never have bothered watching. This is one case where I like the movie better than the book and am actually glad I read the book after the movie.

Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

I feel like the reasons stated in your post are exactly why the movie made the Darcy character into this unbearable shrew with no redeeming qualities; They needed people to sympathize with Dex and Rachel, and it would have been difficult to pull off in a 90 minute movie if the Darcy character was likable. By changing the story a little bit (omitting the part where Rachel flat out set Darcy and Dex up) and eliminating any of Darcy's good qualities, they ensured that people would root for Rachel.

But that's the problem! Hardly anybody rooted for Rachel and Dex because they are still lying, cheating scumbags!

reply

that's an oversimplification and gross generalization. lots of people rooted for them because they meant well and it was a case of 'wrong place, wrong time'. furthermore, in the film, i appreciated that they showed rachel and dex to be a little more sympathetic. in the book, dex didn't have much of a conscience about his cheating but in the film he wrestled with it. they were both people pleasers, so they were very selfless and put everyone ahead of themselves. that was the whole point of the film- that those two characters found their voice at the end and had to speak up for what they wanted.

reply

i don't think they really omitted that part. dex still says to rachel 'i always thought you set us up'.

reply

Darcy was still really unlikable in the book.
