It felt like a very flat ending to me.He became a fallen priest and looked pretty miserable and broken.

He wasn't fallen or broken. if anything, he was enlightened. He cast out his pride, which was stopping him from understanding what christ was really about and began worshipping in silence, humbled by the pain and suffering he caused himself and others.

As Kurtz states. These fallen priests put on an external show for the Japanese but still silently observed their faith till the end.
