The quality of discussion here...

I was active on the IMDb in the late 90s, and in those days the quality of discussion was exponentially more sophisticated and thoughtful. I expect childish and shallow posts to prevail on Transformers boards and such, but I find that the vast majority of discussion anywhere on these boards anymore is breathtakingly thin.

Enjoying movies is not the same thing as being in a position to debate them -- the former does not, alone, qualify you to do the latter. Some of you here on the Silence boards are worth your weight in the quality of your discourse, and to each of you I just say: I wish you could've known the boards 18 years ago. You would have treasured them, and they would have appreciated you.

But most of you here -- whether you actually are or not -- come across as astonishingly imbecilic. You're on these boards because you have nothing better to do. Free advice: that "something better to do" would be the study and scrutiny of the very art form you're always dragging through the dirt.

18 years ago morons didn't know how to use computers or internet. These days everyone and their dog is connected. The internets is a truly democratic place now.
The oldtimers probably see the hopelessness of the situation and don't put in much effort anymore. Trolls, paid and ordinary, dominate and kill all actual discussion (not talking just about IMDB but all major websites).

God save us all.

... not to put too fine a point on it, but by 1999, virtually everyone was on the Internet. Over the years, though, IMDb has become more frequented by rate-by-numbers types and the troll crowd. A whole generation has grown up with the Internet, which unfortunately has helped propel a culture of putting people down and trashing this or that rather than engaging in a mature, thoughtful discussion.

Of course, those elements were always there—they have just grown since then.

Certainly not true across the world. My only contact with it was at computer class in school. I don't remember any of my classmates having internet connection at home. It certainly wasn't a vital necessity yet.

Quick search tells me that even among Americans internet use has increased from ca 50% to ca 85%.

Yeah, I should have specified that I meant in America. I am not sure about exact percentages or how they are tabulated, but I could have phrased matters more precisely. What I mean is that circa 1998, the Internet in the US went from being more of this eclectic or occasional source of information and interaction to something that was extremely mainstream, to the point where it was starting to compete with television and other more traditional media platforms.

Oh lar-de-dar, resurgence. Do you have any idea how pompous and arrogant you sound? Get over yourself, dude.

Maybe this is also the message of "Silence" you can attempt to force your beliefs onto society, but ultimately you have to coexist with...your term...imbeciles.

This is the new fear of 64,000,000 Americans. And it should be a fear.

The collective stupidity in 2017 is troubling.

I think Silence perfectly represents what we must try to do, coexist. It's painful, difficult and truly a mental sacrifice.

With all of that aside, Silence was a really good film.

collective stupidity - whatever that is - I would imagine it to always be a problem.

At the same time more people have access to more science than ever before. Even if it's only wikipedia.

Ever since early November every board has been overrun with trolls promoting anti intellectualism.

Just came back from seeing SILENCE and wanted to share my thoughts. Your comment was the first I read. You Pseudo-Intellectuals make me sick.

This is a thread for discussions on the movie Silence....NOT for insulting members.....

The degeneration of intellect in the world in the last twenty or so years is not confined to the imdb, or only the internet either. I've been writing/thinking
about the dumbing down of America and the world for a lot longer than twenty years. Moronicism is rampant; almost like a contest to see how riciculously dumb people can be. Sure am glad I never had any kids or anything in THIS world, and am also equally happy that in all likelihood, I won't be around much longer either. By the way, the reason people are being allowed to be so dumb these is that the people who control the world find dumb people to be a lot easier to control and dominate, that's all. They make more money this way. People are a lot easier to con.

Blah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah

Then why don't you just kill yourself to overcome the pain of this so called "dumbing down of this planet"?

It's about time you set yourself free.
