Those who have seen both adaptions, which do you like better?


Masahiro Shinoda's Silence (1971) or Martin Scorsese's Silence (2016)?

I just found out about the 1971 version, had no idea that it existed, and was curious what your thoughts are and if you found it superior to the newer version.

The new one by Scorsese is by far superior to the 1971 Shinoda one.

Primarily because of the endings. Both are relatively faithful adaptations until the end.
Scorsese's is more lush and stylish and hypnotic and dreamlike, Shinoda's is earthy and just straight-forward, stylistically.

However, the end of Shinoda's is AWFUL. That film version was made just 5 years after Endo's book was published, and Endo saw that film and, because of the ending, HATED the film and apparently told Shinoda so. I think Endo would love Scorsese's version...
