Silence is better than

all 9 films up for best picture for an academy award. What a joke.

I agree. Not that I think the nominees are bad, they're good films, a couple are really well crafted like LLL and Manchester. But there are a few things in each film I feel like it didn't reach their potential. LLL's characters had it way too easy. Moonlight, though culturally important, doesn't really go anywhere. Manchester was pretty solid and witty, but not BIG. I liked Jackie, it was an interesting exercise in editing, but too little development, it's mostly Portman moping around. And I have a small issue with Arrival's ending. Just the twist wasn't done right.

But Silence had it all: progression in conflict, epic scale, epic ending, culturally important, artistic creativity. It is a much better film.

Is it possible to have it all and be garbage?

reply

Oh wait, I forgot about Hacksaw Ridge...... That was a solid film too. I still like Silence more, but damn was Hacksaw Ridge good. I wouldn't mind if either Hacksaw or LLL won, just not excited for the Oscar race this year.

reply

Yes Hacksaw Ridge was very good. Good directing by Mel Gibson, he deserved the nod.

i also cant believe garfield didnt get nominated he was terrific

reply

Or could it be that it is so vastly superior to all the nominees that the film is simply well above the average taste of the AMPAS can appreciate?

reply

LLL is a basic 1+1 exercise of dream and fantasy, and maybe love in the 23rd century where great love between a boy and a girl simply does not exist any more.

reply

Yup.

At the very least, it's as good as Lion, and even better than Hacksaw Ridge.

I agree. But I think moonlight is gonna come in with the upset or hacksaw ridge . I don't think la la land will win it all. Kinda like gravity a few years back . It won everything but then 12 years a slave came through with the upset for best picture

reply

Really? Hacksaw Ridge? That's probably the least-deserving of the nominees to win.

I'm not saying it isn't a good movie, but Silence has actually gotten better reviews. Just check out the Metacritic scores.

If any movie upsets La La Land, it'll probably be either Moonlight or Hidden Figures, which won the SAG Awards for Best Ensemble last night.

I wouldn't say Hacksaw Ridge is the least deserving, especially when looking at reviews. 9 out of 10 reviews I read had little to complain about the movie and spend more time criticizing Gibson for his past than the movie.

I also don't see Hidden Figures winning Best Picture. It was a good movie and all, but it was really straightforward and bland in some places.

The least-deserving film in the Best Picture race (in my opinion, because that's all any of this is, obviously) would be Manchester by the Sea. That movie is my new definition of the term "Oscar Bait". Great acting, but dull story that was constructed only to check off all boxes on the Award Season Checklist.

Hacksaw Ridge has a 71 score on Metacritic. Silence, on the other hand, has a 79.

The one movie that has the lowest Metacritic score of all the Best Picture nominees is Lion, with a 69. But on Rotten Tomatoes, Hacksaw Ridge has the lowest average rating among top critics, with a 7.4. Silence has a 7.6. Hidden Figures? A 7.8.
