have a specific meaning related to the plot and/or scenes? I know that some writers do that - and I wouldn't be suprised if that happened here.

Well I saw it as he listens to the music that he did before he met his wife and started his family. Bruce Springsteen and The Who are the two artists that I distinctly recall being prominent in the film. Both artists would have been huge when Charlie and Alan were in college together (not that they're not huge today). So I think that its part of his coping process and trying to get lost in a world where he doesn't have to remember. And I wouldn't be surprised if Sandler or someone suggested the specific songs. Just my thoughts though...
