Usually when Adam Sandler plays a complete wacko, it is very funny, but in this movie he was downright depressing. For all the money they were paying him, he couldn't have done ONE crazy song or kooky comedy routine like "Canteen Boy"?---it certainly would have lightened the mood. Give me "You Don't Mess With Zonhan" any day!
I would have to say this movie was more disappointing than depressing. In just a ten-minute stretch there were many comic elements: dentists, a crabby landlady, a wacky scooter ride, "punk rockers" AND comedy legend Robert Klein! Ordinarily, just add water and stir for comedy gold (just imagine what Jerry Lewis would have done with this!) But, for some strange reason, it never seemed to come together. Oh well, Adam Sandler CERTAINLY rebounded with "Don't Mess With The Zonhan!"
The OP is a prime example of someone who can't accept when an actor steps out of there usual kind of film and trys a hand at something new. This is one of my favorite movies because Adam shows that he can be a serious actor while still giving us some laughs as well. Don't get me wrong I love all the other movies he made like Billy Madison, Click, The Longest Yard, Happy Gilmore etc but I enjoyed this movie more then them because it was different.
Actors who mainly do comedies sometimes also do drama. I once tuned into a movie, and the only thing I knew about it was that it was a Woody Allen movie. I expected to see a comedy, only to find it was a drama (Interiors). It happens. Reign Over Me is a drama with some funny bits. Many dramas have funny bits.
