Sutherland's Judge Role.......

As the movie was going on I kept waiting for Donald Sutherland to appear, since he is an A list star and didn't expect just a walk on. I felt the entire court scene was contrived in every way, and it was as though they contracted wit Sutherland and had to create a part that was worthy of his star quality.

But it didn't fit. His rudeness to the first lawyer, was simply nasty, without given a reason (which there was) And then his insult to the second lawyer, was simply gratuitous, showing that he was an authoritative person.

His then telling the inlaws that they should come and decide what their daughter would want done with her husband, was really beyond silly.

The film sort of worked, and had a special appeal as someone who live in the Upper West Side where this was filmed and now lives in Southern California, and misses the old hood.

Couldn't disagree more - he was wise, fair, and did his job. (and really made the scene thrive)

I agree with you alrodbel. It didnt fit. I dont know much about how judges work, i dont believe they are that caring and it was indeed beyond silly what he said to the inlaws. But like you said the movie worked. For me , it actually worked so well I gave it a 10 and I dont think I have ever given a movie a 10.

I loved this movie, but Sutherland bothered me as the judge. I have nothing against Donald Sutherland, but I think it was a poor choice to cast him in this role. I agree, however, that the film still works. It didn't ruin anything.

"i dont believe they are that caring"

Judges aren't a separate species from you, each one is different, just like you and me.
