Sandler was miscast
Good movie but adam sandler being the lead of this drama was a miscast. I enjoy him in some of his comedies but in this movie, he was just bad- similar to Will Ferrell in STF

shareI agree... I thought he was terrible in this role. He needs to stick to comedy... he CAN'T pull off the serious roles like this.

I thought he was great in this. Have you seen Punch Drunk Love? He was fantastic in that. I wish he do more dramas.
shareI think he worked so good in Punch Drunk Love because the scenario was fitted to his nervous and unpredictable kind of acting, the mise en scene was thought to reflect how someone like him would feel about his surrounding. I agree with the OP, although Sandler didn't deliver a bad performance in this, it wasn't dramatic enough for what the film needed, I liked it but I can't avoid thinking that it needed a different treatment, another more fitted director and a much more talented leading actor, this film is good but it leaves you thinking that it could have been driven in a better way.
shareIn most cases, it does work, at least with great comedians.
The best comedians have great timing which is crucial for serious roles. Usually these comedians have great stand-up, while Sandler mostly just has meh low-brow comedy films. No timing really needed, so can't really judge if someone like that is good for a serious role.
Haven't you ever seen Spanglish? He was great in that film. A loving father, devoted husband, awesome cook. Very simple role for anyone, but for someone like Sandler to step away from comedy, Spanglish was a good place to start. Not an overly serious role, but it wasn't Big Daddy or Little Nicky.
shareI think Ferrel really pulled off his role in stranger than fiction. Thats probly my favorite movie for him.
shareDisagree, the was great in this film.
His finest performance to date.
Ferrell was also decent in STF.
Totally agree. He lacks depth. I kept thinking this was Billy Madison pretending to be depressed. Powerful story line, however.
shareThe fact that you could only see Billy Madison is your hang up, not Sandlers. The issue shouldn't be whether he can pull off a dramatic role, because he clearly can, the issue should be whether certain people should see Sandler in those roles. If you can't separate an actor from one role to the next, you should only see that actor in specific roles. Which I think will only suck for you because you'll be missing out on some really amazing performances.

I thought he was excellent. I'm not usually one to get emotional during movies but the scene at the therapists office where Charlie finally talks to Alan about his family got to me. His delivery was powerful, at least to me anyway.
shareAs someone who is not a fan of Sandler's comedies I thought Sandler was terrific in this film. Like the poster above, the scene where he tells Charlie tells Alan his story brought me to tears. Same with the scene where he finally confronts his in-laws after the hearing. This showed (as did Punchdrunk Love) that Sandler has range and depth and can do more then make comedies filled with bathroom humor. I only hope he does more dramas in the future.
shareim not a sandler fan but i thought he wasnt all that bad in this movie.
HOWEVER, i also think it wouldve been a lot better if someone else played that role
Sandler was indeed weak here, still a good movie though (but spoilt of course by the saccharine happy sweet Hollywood ending - that's not how PTSD ends in real life, people who are seriously damaged remain so for years perhaps for ever, they do not suddenly 'emerge' they learn to live with their scars which are a part of them and life does not fold around them - wonderful people attracted to them and understanding their pain like Oprah Winfrey's the secret, in reality they usually drive everyone away from them).
shareThe movie never implies that Sandler is cured, only that he is on the right path to recovery. That does happen in real life, you know.
shareNah, he did a great job.
